No, they're not okay. But before she could say anything to try and make it better- although she would probably just have managed to make it only worse - Clarity had found herself like a fool, feeling like the fool she is, alone in the middle of the kitchen, looking helplessly at the door that had just swallowed the man that she loves.

John chuckles. It's soft; he's amused despite the tension she's got running through her whole body. "It's not a mental institution, if that's what you're thinking, Claire. The first words of John's answer felt to her like a slap in her face and a deep cold had invaded her whole being. By instinct, she would have got up right away from his lap if he hadn't hugged her tighter then. So she had just listened to him still and silent, whichever words she could have said blocked in her throat by the conflicting thoughts...

By the time he's nestling into Clarity's body, he's crooning the song to her with his lips near her ear ... his deep voice pitched low and dangerous.

The highway is thick with weekend traffic when he starts home. After years of knowing what to look for in other drivers' little quirks, he half keeps an eye out for excessive speeds and bad passes, the other half of his brain watches his own driving while turning over the conversation between himself and Lily over a few times.
