Egan's inside the main building of the Big Sur Inn. He and Richard LeBrok are sharing a table by the window in the small restaurant, drinking beers, not talking much. Suddenly, Richard has to handle a newly arrived couple seeking a room for the night. Egan gazes outside, idly. His mind is elsewhere when another car pulls up. He sits bolt upright when he sees it's Steve driving and Tulip in the passenger seat.

He paces the floor, waiting, thinking, worrying. And then he realizes there's really nothing he can do. He just has to accept this. And he has to find more work. Now he starts thinking this over.

When Tulip finally reappears, Steve shoves a glass of wine in her hand, tells her to drink up. She swallows it down in one.

He takes her back to the Big Sur Inn, his mind...

Eventually Steve and me manage to work hand in hand, without hacking at each other.
I'm watching over the noodles and he stirs the sauce. The moment I tell him the noodles are ready he's there with a sieve and smiles. As I mix the noodles with the sauce he starts to uncork a bottle of red.
Peace. Finally. Guess we both are exhausted from the day, which was a heavy one.
But now, there's no horses to be seen for nor any unnerving 'drover' or 'stockman'...

Mate, you could try talking properly to the girl, as crazy as that might sound . She's not the type to be wooed by one of your moody stares. If you don't come right out and ask her nicely, then of course she'll take up with some other fella...although Steve would not be a likely candidate...Not in my opinion anyway..

[This was a bad day...a very bad one. Steve acted like he was out of his mind.
The horses didn't like him one bit. They seemed too like no one at all by the way.
The weather was nasty and the horses were nervous.
As was I. I don't do very well close to nervous horses.

The 'horseboys' did not too well either. At some point they seemed to barely be able to manage the animals.
East tried it with wispering to them and THAT other guy tried...
