This is the thanks I get for being a gentleman and rescuing your pretty little bottom from a saloon fight?

No one asked you to get involved, Wade. Put me down. You're no gentleman ...

<She gives him a half-smile. The last time she accepted such an offer from one of the inhabitants of the Big Sur, she ended up on another
woman's shit-list. But what the hell?>

Can I help it if your clothing lacks a certain, shall we say, ability to cover all your assets?

Uma! Stop it....that hurts...stop it! I'm not messing about....get a hold of yourself...
[she kicks hards and he slips in the beer-swilled tiles....and next moment down he goes. Richie, grabs her round the waist and runs...] |

<Sets Uma down on the asphalt of the parking lot, and manages to hold on to her, and avoid her feet>
Goddammit, knock it off, or I'm going to put you in handcuffs. And you won't enjoy it, this time. <Uma tries to bite his hands> Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys.

[ he staggers to his feet, making for the outside]
Look at my pants! They're ruined! Ted Baker originals...! |

[I move my hand but not, perhaps, where she wanted it to go -- after all, I need to keep a good hand-hold on her, lest some misfortune befall this poor
damsel... Her eyes flash at me but she's no longer trying to get away so hard. I'm staring down at her.]
You really are quite beautiful when you're riled up like this... [This is the moment I plop her back on her feet...]

[Jeff comes out to assist, carrying his beer with him]
Brawling with half-naked women, Pog? You little devil, you...wait until I get you home... |

Just let me go, you ...
[Unfortunately, he puts me down rather hard ... and I stumble into him because my ankle's not quite as steady as it should be. I must have twisted it slightly. I grip onto his arm ... nice bicep ... and shake the ankle out until I can stand on it without falling over...]

Okay, you can all calm down. I'm not homicidal any more. Sorry, Paul, but you shouldn't get in the way of Bud White or me when our blood's up....I
would have been okay if I could just have slugged the bitch....
My main regret is Skinner's not here to see the mess I made of his precious restaurant.... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart...

Uma...never mind. <Turns and walks away, not bothering to try and get her to see reason. The only one left at his table
is Jack, who is calmly tossing back the remnants of his beer. Nola is gone. He sighs in frustration.>
Where'd everyone go? Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys.

Lachlan took her home...or something. He's a bloody fast mover, mate. Didn't know he had it in him...
Excuse me, Richie. There's a young lady over there who looks a bit lost... [Jack gets up and walks over to Wade's young date] You look a bit lost, love...let me buy you a drink...name's Jack...and you are...? Better get that seen to...

Some fucking knight in shining armor... <He speaks to himself only, and signals toward the bar for another beer, while
opening the abandoned files and reports that were supposed to be the focal point of the night. Everyone else gets the girl, and he gets the dirty work. Even
Richie Roberts has to to have an off night.>

Where did Richie go? I wanted to say I was sorry...even if he did break up a really promising fight. Why do men always do that? They'd go nuts if someone
stopped them from hitting someone when they were in a mood...
[she turns round and realises Wade is standing there, eyeing up Ann with amusement. Out of the blue she slapps him hard across the face] That's for Mola...and for touching Ann up, you sleaze...and for dating a girl half your age., you pervert..and for Colin's face, because something tells me you know how that happened... and you know something else? It just makes me feel so much better, somehow... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart...

Thanks for standing up for me, Uma. Now -- maybe we should go find a bar where we won't be annoyed by low class men?

What she said!
[I stumble off to follow Uma ... but can't help the glance backwards, just to see ... I know I shouldn't get that little lilt inside my gut when I see Wade's watching me walk away. No, Ann, do NOT shimmy! Damn.]

[All in all, an amusing evening.
And quite revealing. Something's eating at Uma -- something beyond seeing the woman her husband cheated with -- something more significant. But whatever it was, her emotional and destructive actions tonight played into my hands. To have so many of the little group witness her losing her mind? Yes, indeed. Couldn't have imagined it'd be this good. Now, I'm feeling like a bit of exercise ... Need to go find my date ... Inside, I see instantly she's not sitting demurely at the table as I'd expected. I glance around. Don't see her at first. Ask the waitress -- who points at a far booth in the pub. Oh really?] Well, there you are, sweetheart. Shall we go? Perhaps you'd enjoy a short drive down the coast before I escort you back to your home? [Even though I'm talking to my young date, my eyes are boring into the young Jack Corbett. You'd think he'd know better than to play in my game... My date rises and tucks a little hand under my arm. I'm already anticipating working out with her to find the way to quiet the quickening of my pulse ...]
