On the short walk to the beach Kathy juggles the leashes of Buck and Snoops, both dogs pulling to the place where they can run freely. She looks down and shakes her head, "no. Nothing that would help you really.
.
"I just searched the internet for your name. I thought I'd find something different than I did though."
She smiles, "hey, the good news is that you do exist."
Gene's answer is a snort and he pulls out his cigarettes again.
"Uh uh, you can't smoke now. You will need your good arm to throw Buck's ball soon. Bet you can throw it further than I can."
With a scowl he puts the pack back in his pocket.
"I found some newspaper reports about you. Some regular police stuff, some about an inccident back in the sixties..."
"Great. Sodding great." The last thing he wanted to happen is that being dragged up again.
"Well the way I see it it was an accident. A horrible one but it happens. And it was so long ago." She bites her lip, "for me anyway."
She looks at him but he refuses to meet her eyes.
"But that reporter must have been some asshole. The whole article was so mean, they blamed you for all of it."
"Bleepin right she did. She was was a friggin' pain in my arse!"
"I bet." Kathy smiles again.
"Not your fault what happened. So..then I found some more things about you from later on. And something about the dissapearance of your co-worker. And...uhm...the pictures were...you don't look older now. So, I know you told me the truth. Not that I thought otherwise."
For a while they are quiet. At the beach Kathy lets the dogs run free. Buck and Snoops have known each other for a while now and are good buddies.
"So Red. What didja expect to find then?"
"You sure you are ready to hear this?"
"No. But tell my anyway."
And she does. She tells him about the other men and where they come from. First looking for words, then stuttering her way though it and finishing with, "I know it sounds crazy. But we can watch a movie or two this week. In fact, I think if you are going to be around for a while, you should watch all of them. But with you it is different. You are the first one that comes from...ah you know."
Gene lights a cigarette with a look that dares her to say anything about his health again.
She doesn't.
He takes a deep drag, "woman, if anyone else would tell me this, I'd have them cuffed, comitted to the looney bin and never let out before they could cry police harrassment."
Kathy grins, "but not me? No cuffs? And here I thought you'd be up to play a bit of tough sheriff."
He barks out a laugh, "you are too much Red."
"Come. This is a lot to digest and it will take a while. You can ask me any questions you have later. Look at Buck, he's a sheltie, they don't like water too much, while Snoops..well see for yourself. Now I'll have to wash her before I take her home.Throw this, Buck is just dying to play ball."
