Be prepared -- you will not want to miss this story's next chapter. You'll come away from this shaken and awed, and so moved that you've gotten
this view into the private past of The Drover.

Oh Roo! I think Uma said it all! What a heartbreaking story! And yes… it left me 'shaken and awed, and moved'
There are many sentences that touched me deeply, both by their poetry, their strength… both.
When I've seen Australia, I've immediately thought that I would love to read the book… until silly me found out that there was no book.
But this, this is even better. Thank you!

Thank you, Uma for your kind words. Your compliments mean so much to me!
Thank you, Clarity - that is a HUGE compliment indeed. I went on Amazon looking for the same book you did and didn't find it either. And I already knew it didn't exist. Didn't do a damn thing to soothe my disappointment, though. And here is where I confess the truth. For the past several months Drover has been whispering into my ear, telling me his story. My task was to fill in some of the details he skipped over and write it all down as quickly as I could. I feel honored to have been his chosen scribe. |

Me too! Me too! I mean I love it too!
Sorry for responding so late, I'm slowly working my way through emails and the threads on the baord that I couldn't keep up with last week. I have to say that I liked Australia but wasn't really too crazy about it. After reading Drover's story I feel like watching it again. If there is no book about it then they should give you the rights to write one. Because I too felt like this was Drover's (the one from the movie) voice and his real story. I just want to hug him and like Franki said, make it all better. Amazing how you put all the information about that time in the story. It's not an easy read because it makes me so angry for all the injustice and sad for everything that he has to endure. But I still enjoyed it. I hope he'll find more luck and love along the way in our little world. Thanks! ![]()

Finally, I catch up on this wonderfully evocative back story. I'd like to echo what so many have said, particularly in view of the desire most felt to find
a book to fill in the details. Australia as a film had so many things going for it but I felt that the sum of its individual parts far exceeded the
whole. Something was missing. That something has been replaced with this cycle of stories. We needed the background, mostly because in that lies the real story
of the film...two real stories, in fact. There is that terrible tragedy of Gallipoli that shaped men like the Drover - as well as the brutal racism that
existed in Australia - and many might say still hangs over its society today. These were the real issues of the film which somehow seemed to get lost in the
spectacle, as if the director almost had too much to say - and as a result said not enough.
Roo, you did the opposite. In this spare and pure prose, you gave us the real kernel. It break the heart but is so real. I find myself increasingly weary with filmmakers and writers these days who seem to take the easy way out too often. This is the kind of uncomrpomising story I want to read. Although I love to have this quality of work on DBB, I have to ask myself....shouldn't this have a wider audience? Roo, you are a writer of real talent and empathy. It's time for a larger stage... gorgeous work. Justice has been done to those wonderful characters in this story - and it is a period of history that has always resonated with me. Loved it... |
