So, it was the same bonfire after all, huh? I'm glad it was. Thank you for having waited for me instead of coming here right away. People in this county must feel reassured to have such a caring sheriff.



[They both look at Uma and Ann walking away, back to the bonfire. Clarity does nothing to follow them. Nor does John.]

Um seems that our friends need some time alone, they must have little secrets to tell to each other. They both have had rough times lately, as you know.

[She almost adds that she knows he's had, and is probably still having, rough times too. But she thinks better of it. He looks almost relaxed and she doesn't want to spoil that moment.]

[Well, he's just done it. Spoil the moment. She didn't expect him to ask questions about her, and particularly not that straight one about East. But maybe she should have, after what he's heard through his radio a few days ago.

She shivers, feeling all of a sudden the cold of the night get under her skin to her bones.

What else was she expecting?]

[Ouch, this came out a bit too briskly! Once more he was only being the nice and caring man he is, and deserves a nicer answer. Not his fault if she has let herself been carried away by the romantic landscape, by the here and now.

She goes on with a softer tone.]

I'm doing fine, thank you for asking. There has been a time when I was missing home dearly. But not anymore. I'm feeling great now, thanks to all of you. Yet, in a few weeks, I'll have to go back.

Don't be too hard on Max I know he doesn't always behave nicely with most of you, but [She realises then that Max probably wouldn't like her to tell another man, not even the sheriff, that there can be softness beneath his roughness.] well, he's alright. His own way.

[She hesitates, then takes the plunge.]

You know, I could exactly say about you what you've just said about me. You are also always worrying about other people. But what about you John? How are you doing?

Excuse me?

[She looks at him with attention. She doesn't remember having served him more than one beer or two at the bar this evening. Maybe he had asked for something stronger to Paul? But no, he looks perfectly sober. Immensely sad behind that attempt of a smile, but sober.

That he accepted to express his feelings about his loss and how he's trying to cope with it while it's obviously difficult for him, touches her deeply.

But that last sentence about "that other place where John Biebe is still sheriff" doesn't make sense.

Her rational mind doesn't take too long to find a rational and reassuring explanation: he's been hurt so bad by this divorce and the impossibility for him to see his children, and probably also his wife that he obviously still loves, that he's talking about his life before as if it was another place, and about himself as another man. She thinks she's read something about that when she was younger and fascinated by human mind.

But what counts to her now is that this sweet man is still bleeding inside, in spite of his efforts to hide it. And that makes her heart ache for him.



She gets closer, takes his big warm hand in her smaller and colder ones, and squeezes it gently. She knows there is nothing she can do for him, nothing but try and give him some comfort and support.

Something that East had told her comes back to her mind: "He spends his time trying to find a way back I hope he makes it one day. It's all he cares about...his boys and his wife, Donna..."]

I imagine that it must be real hard for you. But, try to keep hope, John. Nothing is ever definitive except death. They are alive, you are alive. Everything is still possible.

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to worsen your pain. Sometimes it helps to talk, but sometimes it just doesn't. I shouldn't have asked.

[She doesn't let go of his hand and looks at the sea, glistening under a blue moon.



Anything to distract him for a while from that pain she can read in his eyes.]
