[Terry looks around and takes a chair at the kitchen table, joining his hands and resting them on the table, giving Kathy a warm smile] Yeah, there was something I needed to discuss with you, Kathy. It's about John. You know I value your opinion? No one knows the prof like you do. There's something I would like him to assist me with but because of the nature of the work, because it impinges on a possible conspiracy that might effect us all, I am concerned that it might be too much for John to handle. I know this means talking abut his state of mind and whether or not he is fragile. That is personal information that you may feel uncomfortable revealing. I don't intend to pry in any way. But I need to fill you in on some disturbing anomalies that have been happening around us recently and suggest some possible dangers surrounding them. Dangers for John and you as much as all your friends here. John is a brilliant man whose brain can process connections and complexities far better than the rest of us. He may be able to see aspects that we can't. He may even be able to express what is happening in a more scientific or rational way. But I would never involve him in anything detrimental to his condition. And only you can really judge the risk to him in all this. It began with these new guys who showed up recently. Logan and Drover. You heard about them? Probably you've seen them around and noticed they resemble each other...much as I resemble John... There's more, Kathy. And what I know so far may be only the tip of the iceberg.... [Terry proceeds to summarise what they know so far...] *I'm for real, mate...*

"You are serious." "Yes. The matter is very serious." "But...but...I met Logan. He seems to be so nice. I don't think I've seen Drover yet but I've heard about him. Logan was really very ...I don't know. He just didn't seem to have a dark aura you know. A bit different maybe, but not really bad. Now Cullen and others that look like him??? Uhm..." Terry shoots her an amused look, "dark aura?" "Well..." Kathy smiles "yes. Kind of. Or at least not so nice at times." Now I have a million questions. I'm confused and scared as hell, but while we are at it...there is something I have to tell you later. Have you ever met Gene Hunt? The cop from England? He is... he has a story too. But first about John..:" She sighs, her hands start playing with the cap of the milk bottle. "Okay, let me think for a moment." "Sure, take your time love." Terry gives her an encouraging smile. Kathy chews first on her upper then on her lower lip, her hands are now twisting strands of hair. Finally she starts to speak, "I have different thoughts and feelings about this. First of all, I think John is stable right now. I'm not a doctor or anything but I'd say he is doing fine. Work keeps his mind occupied and he likes what he does there and I've not witnessed anything more out of the ordinary at home as usual." She smiles, "other than the odd pair of miss matched socks on his feet and some other little things that come with living with a genius.Not that I don't have some weird habbits too, that he has to live with." What she doesn't mention is that they had some rough patches during the last months. That was nobody's business and anyway, they were jut little bumps and they loved each other. "I think you already know about this, weren't you there during that time too? Anyway...John was very determined, almost or very close to losing it after coming here. He told me, Uma told me. That was before I even started to hang out at the Phoenix and I didn't know him then. At first he didn't believe what the others told him, then he tried like mad to find a solution - or whatever you want to call it, for this whole thing. He was possessed with it. He must have been in such a dark place back then." She gives herself a little shake, "what I'm getting at is this: He is happier now but I do know that now and then he still works on trying to find patterns, solutions...whatever... about this situation. He is not as determined anymore but there are a couple of folders in his study where he has written down some theories and thoughts over the years. And he still takes them out some days when he comes up with another angle. So I think he would actually like to share some of this with others. He doesn't know the things you do now, perhaps together with his work on this from the past he might really discover something." After a little pause she continues, "even if he is stable right now, I'm not sure how he'd react if he gets too deep into these thoughts again. I haven't even digested half of what you told me but the word conspiracy has an even worse ring in my ears where John is concerned. On the other hand it would be safer for him because this time he wouldn't be alone in this. He could talk to me about it, no he would have to talk to me about it, or else I won't let him do it. Then there is you and everyone else who works on this too, so he'd maybe know it's not his mind making things up. And I truly think he would like to work on this. Naturally it has never left his mind completely..." Terry nods, "yeah. I know..." Kathy takes his hand and squeezes it. They are quiet for a moment. "I don't want to take the chance away from John to do this. He has to decide but if he say yes I'm putting down some ground rules." She gives Terry an unwavering look, "if he thinks he can put off his meds, then no I will not let him do this. I will fight him and anyone else tooth and nail about this. The meds these days are better and he has no trouble working so he can do this too. He will have to agree to answer any questions I have and he has to live with me fuzzing over him now and then and watching him. You and him, everyone has to live with me being there sometimes. And you and everyone else have to tell me if you think he has a change of behaviour. If this gets really dangerous, you, Dino, Maximus... you are responsible to keep him safe, you hear me?" "Loud and clear." "Good. Maybe John doesn't even want to be involved. But we have to let him know about it. It wouldn't be fair to keep it all from him." Her hands shake when she pours him another cup of coffee. "Do you...do you think we can help him if he does get into deep? I mean he has Dr. Crane that he still sees but he can hardly tell him about this... Can we keep him safe?" "...and leaves me still in love with you. He won't be alone this time, but working with a group of us, and if anything happens that worries us -or you - we will refer it to his doctor immediately. And I'll personally make sure he's taking his meds. But I think you are on the nail. He has a right to be part of this, especially as he has already been researching anomalies. Kathy, he may well be light years ahead of us already. It us who have been the crazy ones for letting things slide, not him. Everyone has a part to play, no one more centrally than John Nash. And I'll make sure he has me as his private bodyguard. That set your mind at rest? Now, while you're thinking...any chance of you getting to work on my back? I'm about as tense as a coiled spring...you better have strong hands, love... *I'm for real, mate...*

And I know you will watch out for John because you do not want to see me furious!" She is glad when Terry starts to goof around and wriggle his eyebrows while he takes his jacket off. This has all been a bit overwhelming. She's always known things with John and the other guys were a little tricky but this scared the hell out of her. Terry is really good at his job, he makes this whole, surreal situation easier for her and she is thankful for it. "Whoa, you are fast!" Kathy grins, "never thought I'd have Terry Thorne stripping for me in my kitchen, maybe I should sell tickets.." She giggles, "oopsie, was that already sexual harrasment?" Then she gets serious, "come and sit in the living room. I need five minutes, let me tell you about Gene while I get everything ready." She drags the massage table out of the bedroom and sets it up in the living room. While she lights scented candles and puts different bottles and tubes on the living room table, sometimes opening one and sniffing, she talks. "Gene Hunt is a cop from England. Manchester to be exact. I know this hard to believe but with everything happening ... Well, Gene's story is this: He was a ...what is is called, DCI in Manchester in 1973." She takes out blankets, a thin white sheet and towels then sits down with Terry on the sofa. "A DCI is some kind of higher up cop there, you'd probably know better then I do, " she laughs. "So Gene was involved in an investigation, people got abducted and then killed. During that case a friend/co-worker went missing. Gene went to a pub - in Manchester - and got drunk. He woke up now, in the future for him I mean. And then there is this thing that he goes to a pub there, in England - and shows up here. At the Phoenix. That is where I met him. At first I didn't like him but we are friends now, good friends, so he told me all of that. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to talk to Uma, but she wasn't here anymore. I wanted to talk to Ann but she was busy with ... well with Ben and all that. You and Dino weren't here either so all I could think of was to google him. I found old newspaper reports... from 73 and before that. So what he told me is true. And there isn't a movie or a book that I know of. He is real, had a real life... only he comes from the past. He still works with the police there now." She sighs, "you better talk to him yourself soon. Just thought I'd mention it because ..because his friend is still missing and because of everything you told me. Maybe you can help him better than I can." The aroma of lavender starts to fill the air. "Come on now, let me see how your muscles are doing." She softly strokes his back to get a feel first, "geez Terry, doesn't that hurt and give you a headache already? You need to come earlier and more often! Now, this needs the stronger stuff so I'll take some rosemary and mint oils, they will help losen your muscles and get the blood circulation going again after I got the knots out that block the energy flow. A bit of sheabutter will warm your muscles. Now all you need to do is to relax and tell me what feels good and what doesn't." Deftly and with strong hands she strokes along his skin and applies even more pressure to certain points on his back. She licks her upper lip...and what a nice back it is... Tamara enters a ffew minutes later, a carefully typed piece of paper in her hands. She finds John putting on his shoes and socks. He's so troubled these days. Why does that woman torture him so? Can't she see how he feels? But Tamara doesn't ask him for any more information. She feels she may know too much already! "Do you have it?" John asks her, his tone crisp, determined not to betray anxiety. "Yes. I do." Tamara fingers the paper in her hand. "Did you tell him about my situation?" John stares at his assistant. "Are those new shoes?" "Professor! Please don't be charming right now and notice my new shoes!" "They're nice. They show off your toes." "Oh, Professor. Here -- just take it!" She thrusts the piece of paper at him. "I still think this is the wrong way to go about this." John shrugs. "It's not your decision. Now, did you prepare him? He knows about ..." "I gave him an outline. You'll have to give him the details or he won't know where to start. Have you ever done this kind of thing before?" He shakes his head and frowns. "He's a professional, right? So he'll be discreet? And he's good at finding ..." "He knows more about how to find them than just about anyone here abouts. And yes, he's a very discrete man." "When do I meet him?" John asks. Tamara looks at her watch. "He said anytime between 2 and 3. Do you want me to drive you? It's a bit of a challenge to find his office ..." "Just give me the directions. I appreciate the offer but this I must do on my own."

She picks up loads of science magazines for John, then finally finds the letter and reads the invitation. Terry has already told her about it. Now, should she already talk to John or did Terry want to do that at this meeting? Damn, she can't remember. But she better tell him up front so will be prepared and knows what she knows. She wants to see his reaction to all of this anyway and she really, really needed to make her rules clear to him. She will not let him take any more risks than necessary. He peers at the building, which looks oddly like a house converted to an office. It isn't what he expected this kind of professional to be working out of. Tamara said the man had an exclusive clientele -- you'd think he'd have the bucks for something a bit more, er, imposing -- given his line of work. John wonders if maybe there is actually more security than he realizes -- maybe the guy is so good that his security rivalsanything Thorne has at his place. Probably, there are even guys with guns in there right now, watching him, evaluating him. Yes, that would be good, John decides. He wants to deal with a man who would be fearsome to cross. That would do quite nicely, he smiles to himself. That would count for something. John pulls his briefcase from the backseat and gets out of the car. He looks up the street, then down. No one seems to be about. He looks at the building's front door, which you reach by climbing about six stairs. He sees no sign of life there, either. John pictures men watching him and smiles. Only then does he climb the stairs and knock on the door. A buzzer sounds and John pushes the door open. It is quite heavy and takes some effort. Inside, it's surprising light and airy. The room is curiously nearly empty -- nothing in there save a deep green couch, a sedate golden brown wing chair that faces it and a light wooden table between them. The overhead lighting is excellent; John can detect few shadows in the room. Those that are there form perfect ovals. He is studying those oval shadows when footsteps break the silence. "Prof. Nash?" a cultured voice asks. John looks up to see a rather large, well-built man with skin the color of caramel that's been beaten with just the right amount of butter to spread slowly and evenly across a marble slab. His mother used to do that with caramel, just to make his favorite kind of toffee. "My assistant tells me ..." "I've done a bit of research already, Professor. This will likely be far easier than you may anticipate. It will cost you, of course, but then I'm worth it. The results will speak for themselves." "This is critically important. She told you? You see, the woman in question is ..." The man waves his hand. "All I need ever know is that she's of great importance to you, Professor. Why else would you be here?" "She can't know about this." "Professor. Really." The man smiles and shakes his head. He indicates the room's lone seating. John sits on the green couch. He runs one hand over the brocade fabric. The man says, "I believe you've brought me pictures? We need those, Professor." "Yes, yes. I have them right here," John says quickly, pulling two pieces of paper from his briefcase. "I had to print them off from the computer. No time to go by a photo store. Luckily I'd gotten these and ..." "Ah. Yes. Oh, this one in particular! This helps immensely." For the first time since John decided on his course of action, he feels a stab of something ... what is it? Remorse? Fear? He looks at the man's hands, holding the two pictures, sees instead in his mind Kathy's shy smile and knows there really isn't any reason to hesitate any longer. "I believe you need a retainer?" Not too long after this, John is leaving the building and driving to the home he shares with Kathy. His heart is pounding and yet he's also feeling better than he has in days and days. He knows this is right. Inside, he can hear Kathy banging pots in the kitchen. He bites his lip. Okay, he tells himself, keep a straight face and a steady voice. Whatever you do, don't get excited! You cannot let on what you're up to. "Kathy? I'm home." He strides into the kitchen, where he's greeted with a kiss. She tells him what she's fixing for dinner but his mind is elsewhere. He nods and smiles and says, "Yum. I'm famished!" And then he picks through his mail that rests on the counter. He barely sees it. Then he looks at her and smiles softly. "Can we put off the visit to San Francisco until next weekend? Something's come up at work. Will you be too disappointed?"

"Hey babes! Gene is here. We...uhm...I had a little inccident in the city. Nothing too bad, just one of those weirdos trying to take my bag and I kind of didn't want to give it to him. Gene saved me and bashed him up good before he could do any more damage but he still managed to ...uhm...smack me around a little. But I kicked him good too and scratched his face bloody. I think he was on some kind of drug. I'm alright though and the cops arrested that jerk. Gene didn't want to leave me alone, he said he'd wait until you come back." She has told him all this in one second flat, nervous because she didn't know how he'd react to meet Gene again. In their kitchen too. Suddenly it dawns on her what he had said. "But..but you weren't supposed to talk about it! You can not work this weekend. You can't! And you can't talk about the weekend either. You...you just do what...someone wrote in the letter. Okay?" Kathy can see that Gene turns a dark shade of red, hands clenched into fists. "Not safe with me? You..!" "Gene no! Please. John! John!" Kathy stands in the middle of the two man who are facing each other, John's face hard and Gene's red with anger. "NO! STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!! I already have a headache and I've had enough trouble today. Can't you ...just....relax. Take a deep break okay. Both of you. John, of course it wasn't Gene who hurt me! He saved me. I forgot my shades in that little bakery we always go in Chinatown. That weird guy who was obviously on drugs wanted to take my bag. I didn't want to give it to him because...because I had a lot of money in there. He hurt me. I scratched him and kicked him but I don't know what would have happened if Gene wouldn't have come back to look for me. He beat him up good and the police finally arrested him. I hope they'll let him rot in hell forever. Gene drove me to the hospital, I'm fine but bruised. And there is a slight chance of concussion but I don't think I have one." She smiles at Gene, "he came here with me because he didn't want to leave me alone." Softly she rubs John's arm, "see, he saved me and he took care of me. John...please?" Gene shakes himself, "well Red, I better get out of 'ere now before I...." Kathy squints at him, "right I better go. Loverboy here is back." Both man try to stare each other down. Kathy sighs, "wait, let me guide you out." At the door she whispers, "sorry Gene. He doesn't mean it. He is ...maybe he had a bad day at the job or so. Don't be mad okay? And call me when you're here again okay? I'll be at the Library most days next week." "Bye Red. Take care of yerself and watch that eye. And good luck for the weekend with that jer..:" "Hunt! Stop that." Kathy grins. "Call me okay and Gene? Thanks once more." "Yeah." Kathy doesn't find John in the kitchen. She sighs again and sits down, her hand on her aching head. Tabby jumps on her lap and softly starts to purr and lick her nose. She smiles down at the furball, "you think he still wants to talk? Maybe he forgot about it, I so feel not up that that right now. Kathy looks up at him, surprise in her tired eyes. "You don't even realize you do it, do you? One example: he makes a derisive remark about me, and your reaction is to smile at him and as if it's a joke you share. I question why he did not keep you safe from an assailant -- since he is an officer of the law, after all, one would presume he was capable of this -- and your reaction is to accuse me of saying he was your attacker. I ask only that you think on this later, when today's trauma is a memory. If I'm in the wrong, we must discuss it rationally and when it's calm." He walks to Kathy and hands her a bottle of aspirin. "For your headache, Miss Ginger. I've started a bath for you. You should go relax there. It's obvious you're in discomfort."

Hurt him this way? Softly she answers him, "you are wrong. I don't have to think about it to know that. But I will think about it and we will talk." She takes the pills gratefully, while swallowing back a big lump in her throat. "Thanks." Tenderly she takes his hand and rubs her face on it. "I never want to hurt you. Never. But it seems that I do and we have to find a solution for that." All day long she has held back her tears but now they're running down her face, "Ever since this guy was arrested I wanted to hear your voice and be with you. Gene did protect me, he was just a few minutes too late and that wasn't his fault. I went back alone, he came running as soon as I started screaming. But it was scary and it seems even scarier right now." She looks up at him and takes a deep breath, wipes the tears away and tries to smile, "I'll be fine. I'll take the aspirin, hop in that bath and maybe then I can get my favourite man to rub some sweet smelling lotion on my back? I can't reach back there you know." After getting up from the table, she staggers a little. Her legs feel like rubber and her head is pounding. "Uh oh, not sure I'm up for much else though. This hurts like hell. But maybe some quality cuddling time?" Hesitating she adds, "and...about...this weekend. The thing you are not supposed to talk about... you will be there, right?" Her reaction to his words makes a lasting impression -- but they had to be said. And now they've been spoken, they've been dealt with for the time being. He watches her leave, heading for the bathroom. But he suddenly gets an idea and knows they need a connection to move beyhond the pain of disappointment they've felt in each other. So he goes into the bathroom where Kathy's just lowered her body into the water. "If you can't reach all the way around your back, my dear Miss Ginger, then I think I'm needed right there in that tub with you," he says, stripping as he goes. He climbs in the tub behind Kathy, grabbing the washcloth and soap. "How about I help you get that beautiful back of yours clean? Let's see if my hands can soothe you, shall we?"

John smiles behind her and continues to stroke her skin, softly over the bruises on her rips. "Uhm John? The thing with the webcam? I ...uh.... I liked it. It was..just such a surprise and then I felt stupid for telling you about my fantasy and ... and then I thought you'd expect me to act differently now and then I felt even more stupid and then I thought you didn't want to touch me anymore because you thought my thoughts were weird and..." "Hush." "Okay." John's soothing hands coupled with the warm water soon has Kathy so sleepy she is ready to drop. Suddenly her body starts to shake. "Kathy? What's wrong? Did I hurt you?" "No." She chuckles. "Look, we have a visitor. And I just felt like someone has walked over my grave. A bit like a deja vu or so." She reaches out and strokes Tabby's head. John shoos the cat away as he prods Kathy from the bath. Despite Kathy's protests, John insists she dry off and hop into bed to rest. Once she does, he closes the bedroom door behind him and goes to his office, accompanied by the cat, who curls up in the chair near him and falls asleep. John is writing up an outline of his next paper when he gets a text message. All it says is, "Have found exactly what you'd hoped I would. Come tomorrow to see the photos." He reads the message twice then sighs. He shakes his head at his own folly. But he knows he's still going to go in to see the evidence...

Does she dare to look into the mirror? She can hear noise in the kitchen and even music. Someone must be in a good mood this early in the morning. She pulls a face at herself in the mirror, "poop! This will look so adorable this weekend." Yawning she pads to the kitchen, "morning! And morning to my three cutsies too." She runs a hand over each cat hat and puts out some dry foot. "Look at me, I look horrible! I hope I can make it disappear a with some good make-up." "Good morning. Sit. I made breakfast for you." John carefully kisses her lips and runs a finger softly down her cheek. "The colors do not exactly suit your hair but it doesn't look as bad as you probably think." Kathy sniffs the air in the kitchen, "pancakes? Yum. You're spoiling me." "Yes. That was exactly the idea." "Thanks! On the off chance that you don't want to hear about this - I need to call Gene and apologize. I was his lift yesterday you know. But I guess he called a cab after he left yesterday." John nods and turns the volume on the radio up. "Alright, alright I get it. You don't want to hear about this right now." " "I just like this song." Number forty-seven said to number three: You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see. I sure would be delighted with your company, Come on and do the jailhouse rock with me Kathy walks over and peeks over his shoulder at the stove, while she tickles his sides. "You like Elvis? Have I missed something all these years? Jailhouse rock - I hope that jerk from yesterday will rot in jail for a long time! I guess I have to go in again when he has to go to court, what do you think? Hey these actually look good!" She spoons a tiny bit of cream in each cat bowl and then digs in from what John serves her. "I could get used to this you know:" John smiles while he scans the front page of the morning paper and Kathy chatters on. "So tomorrow you have to drive with your car to the place you're not supposed to talk about. Because...uhm...someone is taking the train in. Not sure someones car can make the trip twice in one week." "Okay." "I'm busy today you know. I have two dogs in the morning, Then I have to pick up Snoops and I want to get some things. Then I work at the Library...but I'll be home at six or so. Maybe you can pick me up and we can have dinner at the Phoenix?" "...and leaves me still in love with you. She finally wipes all the Make-up from her face, after trying in vain to cover up the bruises and shrugs. "Can't be changed for now." Big shades have to do for today. She packs everything in her car, quickly walks her first two dogs then picks up Snoops and drives to Lily's garage. "Hello? Anyone here? Colin?? Cort comes out to greet her. "Cort! I heard you're back. That is so very good!" She puts the two bags down and gives him a long hug. "Is Colin here?" "Sure am. Something wrong with that unknown object on four wheels of yours?" Kathy laughs, "not this time, no. I'm here to bring you something. I know I'm a bit late but happy birthday!" She steps forward again and gives Colin a buss on the cheek and a hug. "I've brought you something. Well, for you and for Hando...actually for everyone." While she takes out bags with muffins, apple cinnamon rolls and other goodies she notices the frowns on the two men's faces. "What? Wasn't it your birthday?" "It was but Kathy - what happened to your face?" "Oh that! Nothing too bad, I had a run in with a mugger yesterday in the San Francisco. I was there with Gene, you know the guy from England. The jerk is already busted so no worries." Cort shakes his head, "I hope he gets what he deserves." "Yep, me too. He already got part of it. Gene let him know pretty hard what he thinks of guys trying to rob handbags from women." They talk for a few minutes and both of the men are already chewing on some muffins. "Have to run now. Tell Hando happy belated birthday too. Bye!" It takes her around 30 minutes to drive up to Maximus' vineyard and is greeted by his big dog first. He growls first but when she holds out her hand for him to sniff he starts wagging his tail. In the car Snoops starts barking like mad. "Hey Lupus where is your master? Don't mind the lady in there, she's not as brave as she seems right now." She feeds him some dog biscuits and lets him lead her to the house. "Maximus? Max? Anyone home?" "Kathy! What brings you here?" He stops short his look changing from surprise to anger, "what in the world has happened to you?" Kathy sighs and explains. "...so see? Nothing that can't happen to anyone." "It shouldn't happen and this man has to be punished." "He will be. Listen I came here to ask you if there might be some leftover grapes here and there. Remember when we talked about that in spring? If you don't mind I'll come by this week and pick what's leftover to make some jelly and such. I'll bring you some jars when it's done and you get a massage for free? Deal?" Maximus laughs, "you drive a hard bargain Kathy. But yes, it's a deal. You could also have had them for free but who am I to say no to your offers." He winks. "Great! Thanks." She steps up, puts her arms around his neck and buzzes his stubbly cheek. "Just so you know I would have given you jelly and a massage for free too." She winks back at him and can't help but flirt a little. She hands him the bag with dog biscuits and a bag with some baked goods for him. "have to run now. I working for Ann and Ralph today and have to be there soon. See you next week!" She pets Lupus again and leaves. "Okay Snoops, off to the Library. If you behave we can take a walk with Buck on the beach later." Snoops barks once at the sound of her dog friend's name. "Good girl." There's no time to drive to East and Egan's place today, that would have to wait till next week to ask them for what she needs. With Snoops running in the leash in front of her she knocks on the kitchen door of the Phoenix. "Andy hi!" She hugs him hello, "I don't have much time. Is Paul here yet? No? Doesn't matter, can you give him this? I'll come over later to congratulate him." She hands the last bag with little cupcakes and more muffins over to Andy and smiles. "Tell Paul to share with everyone okay? Oh and I've brought a couple of cans of cat food for that black cat. You want them?" "Sure Kathy." Andy takes the bags and peeks in the one with the pastries, "these look good, but can I ask you something?" "Thanks! I tried a couple of new things. Andy, I've already told this story two times today. I'll make it short okay. I ran into the fists of a mugger but Gene came by in time to set him straight and hand him over to the police. Not too much harm done.When Clarity comes in can you tell her I'm working today? Maybe we can meet for a quick cup of coffee later." "A mugger?" Andy arches his brows, "I'm kinda glad to hear that. Don't get me wrong but I almost thought that John..." "What?" Kathy slaps his arm, "are you crazy? You can't be serious!" "Nah, I guess I wasn't. I'll let Clarity know that you're here. He has more important matters to attend to than these hopelessly unimaginative interns. The drive from work to his rendezvous takes only twenty minutes. John's never been a patient man at the mundane tasks like driving when he's got a goal. Finally, he pulls up to the office and its gravel lot. Now that he's here, he sits behind the wheel, hands on his knees, eyes staring into some middle distance. He considers what he's about to do. Is this really so close now -- the moment of truth? Does he really want to know? What if, now that time is near, it's something he doesn't want to hear when all is said and done? A quick inventory of his body tells him his pulse is elevated. He breathes deeply. If only Charles were here, he muses for a blinding second. Charles would know, Charles would help, Charles would get drunk after. John smiles at the thought, blinks and feels new resolve. It was never really Charles who gave him the push to do unorthodox things he feared, John knows. But sometimes, it's good to think on the lessons of Charles -- even if they were lessons of a phantom. Inside the building, his anticipation is rewarded. And then some. And yet ... and yet. Sometimes even getting exactly what you'd expected doesn't hit you as you expected. The man frowns at John; his manicured fingers rest on the desk as he watches John absorb what he's found. "It comes with independent verification, if that's what concerns you, Professor." John hears the chill in the man's voice and recognizes the unsaid words. After all, this man's a professional of the highest order -- even if what he does is so specialized that finding him takes unconventional connections. John meets his eyes and sees an equal. He didn't expect to feel that way, either. He extends the highest courtesy he can to an equal; he smiles at him and sighs, a show of content with the man's obvious abilities. "Verification was never a question. I would not have come to you if I doubted you'd give it to me. Isn't that so?" "Just so," the man says, returning Nash's smile. He makes a show of presenting the written report. In exchange, John slides across an envelope of cash. "I believe you'll find it all here." The man leaves the envelope alone, indicating that he has no need to count the funds now. After all, if John has not paid the fee in full, a man such as this will have no problem rectifying the mistake. "If you're ever in need again..." "I think not." "A word-of-mouth referral..." "If I ever have the chance to make one, you can be sure you will be given the highest one." The man escorts John to the door. They don't shake hands; such a gesture is hardly indicated at transactions such as this. As John drives away, he wonders at himself. No one who knows him would think him capable of this, in this way. Even Tamara has not believed he would see it through. She thinks he will back down; Nash knows she's wrong. Really, he had no other options.

In the Redwood Room bar Kathy is twisting a strand of hair around her fingers, her toes tapping on the floor. She sips from her drink again, trying to calm her nervs. She's planned this for so long that now the time is finally here, she feels so giddy and nervous that she can hardly stand it. The dress, the hotel, the plans for the evening....would he like it all? Or was it too much. She knows he won't have problems in this environment. At least in his ...former life he's been to many functions in places like this. But she feels a little like Eliza Doolittle and hopes that she won't stumble and land flat on her nose, or have food stuck between her teeth all evening long... No! She will act cool and sophistacated and educated and all that. Yes. No stumbling, no dropping chocolates from the balcony in the opera house, no hick-ups during dinner and no lipstick on her teeth or nose! At least the ladies at the beauty parlor have done a knock out job with the make-up that completely covers her bruised eye. And Eric the hairdresser had given her hair treatments that had felt sinfully good. He had said there was no way he'd use scissors on her hair, so he'd done his magic with pins, gel and hairspray to make her look like a star. He had even added a colored rinse that made her hair look like flames. For the tenth time she checks her watch. She thinks about the beautiful room upstairs and unconsciously licks her lips thinking about what would hopefully take place there later.... They hadn't made love in days and she was about to burst!
