He had held Kathy back so Ralph could protect her from the sudden onslaught of being waylaid by well meaning but exhausting friends who were so relieved to have her back safe and sound but nevertheless peppering her with questions and for explanations.
Once Ralph had led Ann out, he still hadn't talked.
"Do you want to go home John? You must be worn out with reading all those files and then discovering the movie. I still don't know how you managed to find it. No one else did. I'm so proud of you. Have I told you that six hundred times already? I am, you know. I can't help it." She gives him a small sheepish smile and pats his hand lightly. "You're my hero."
John traces her skin along her cheek bone gently with his finger stopping at the curve of her mouth.
"It's my job to observe and analyze the most miniscule atoms of data that the universe gives us daily. I recover hidden parameters from information systems. All the tools I use daily made it a rational function for me to discover the clues we were left."
"I was just doing what I was brought into existence for. My map in life has always been clear."
Kathy shakes her head cutting him off, "Oh no you don't. Don't downplay this, Mister. We have how many cops and military guys here? Did they did discover the film? No. You did. Was their job too, wasn't it?"
John laughs unable to shake off her fierce loyalty and defence of him. He loves it when she acts like a lioness.
"I can live with being one person's hero, I suppose", he says languidly stretching his arms behind his head and then over to wrap themselves around her. "As long as you don't start wailing out that horrible excuse for a song by that dreadful harridan."
Kathy immediately starts humming the Bette Midler tune.
"That's it. We're out of here." He drags her up.
Much to his surprise, he hears voices call out. "Nice play today Nash" "Good work John" "Night Nash".
Kathy says their goodbye waving at everyone resting her head upon John's shoulder.
