<Arthur Hiller was a man who had everything- except a soul. As recompense from the God he blamed for not providing him with one in his maladjusted psyche, he stole the lives of others- after he murdered them by sacrificing them in grisly ways, then feeding the remains to his four Rottweiler dogs. No one would have ever have known to dig into Arthur Hiller's history or his activities, if his new housekeeper had not once been an archeology student and recognized the half-chewed femur of a human leg.
It is days like this, when the state wins and puts someone so monstrous away for at least the rest of this lifetime, that call for celebration. The sadness for the victims, their families and friends tempers the joy, but it's a good day, nonetheless. Or could have been. The plan was to come in, put things away, round up Jack and the rest of the team, and go out to dinner. But the man sitting on the sofa in her office drains all the triumph from her spirit before he even opens his mouth.> Why are you in my office? <He rises with a smile on his face that promises he's going to do his level best to charm his way into her graces. It's worked before, why not now?> ![]() I thought we'd go out to celebrate your latest victory. Arthur Hiller! Been following that case close. That's my girl. We're divorced, therefore I'm not your girl. You can find the way out of the building on your own, or I can ask security to escort you. Your choice. I'll be 'celebtrating' with my staff. <She turns away, removing her jacket and placing her briefcase under her desk. She doesn't turn to face him, in effect concluding their conversation, as far as she is concerned. Outside, the sun is going down on the city, and the night life beginning to stir. Suddenly, she wants that quiet little paradise of the Big Sur. Away from this reminder that her past isn't perfect, and that she's fought hard to be where she's at. It's worse when he comes up behind her. Because sometimes, it felt good with him. Sometimes it didn't.> ![]() Go away. Please. I'm not going to ask you again. Next time, it will be a restraining order... |

<He sat at the back of the courtroom, watching Nola and Jack take the Hiller case and turn it into a triumph of justice, despite the insanity plea and subsequent promise of appeal by Hiller's attorneys. It's the one piece of advice that has truly struck him in classes- to watch and learn, then apply it to what is being taught in the classroom. But there is more to it than that- he's also learning the modern means of forensic science and gathering evidence, in order to apply them to the harder, dirtier job of being the guy who takes the bad guys down.
Now he wanders past her office to his, and peeks in on her. He catches the entire conversation. The sight of the guy's familiarity with Nola hits him in the chest. But worse is the underlying weakness and fight in her voice when she asks the guy to back off. So this is the ex-Mr. Nola, the one she doesn't talk about much, or switches the subject away from when he does come up in discussion. He wants something from her again, and he knows just how to push her buttons and take her resolve. He steps inside the doorway silently, rolling on his feet in order not to make any noise until he is just behind the other man, twisting his arm up behind his back and yanking him away.> She wants you out. Move. Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

<Her ex shakes Richie off and they stare each other down, but he backs off. He looks Richie up and down derisively, his entire assessment of the tough cop on Nola's staff based on his warped idea of what makes a man in this world- money and the means of getting it. Richie stares back impassively; if he is fazed by the other man's point of view, he won't let on. Nola watches the play, mentally chalking a point or two up for the knight in the paisley shirt. Principle and honor mark a man in his world. And that's not a bad thing, ever. It's why she took him on. It's good to have someone in your corner...
She turns away when 'he' leaves, gathering back her cool composure, the wall that protects her from her own vulnerability. Richie parks himself in her chair, giving her her space, but clearly wanting to get a picture of the man he's just tossed out of her life again. That's just his way.> |

I don't know. That depends on what he wants from me, and how badly he wants it.

What does he usually want?
<She's not going to give him the information without an interrogation. Her guard is already up, because she turns away and stares down into the traffic below, weighing and calculating her response.> I got all night, Nola. It's just you and me, baby. And this is a nice chair. Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

<The glass feels cool against her forehead, but the breath she takes feels like a stone in her chest. Richie's not an idiot; he feels his way through a case on instinct, so it stands to reason he deals with people the same way. He's opening the door, letting her lean on him as a friend. It's so tempting to take advantage of the offer.>
He wants me to know there's someone out there who knows how to take me down. It's his game. I'm the fish that got away, and he's never quite got over that. And I guess I just never really got over that he was able to hook me to begin with. |

Honestly, get as far away from here as possible for a while. This was supposed to be a gold star on the calendar. I had Sharon make reservations for us at Bacar in Frisco to celebrate. But if you're asking if I want a detail, no. That lets him win the game.

Okay, Nat...what have you got so far...? Tell me about the fascinating Cullen Murphy and his much maligned soon-to-be-ex wife...

[she hands over a thick file]
Everything's there, Ms. Mareva. I went up to the Big Sur. Uma Murphy used to own a restaurant called The Phoenix- until it went bankrupt and some English businessman bought her out.Everyone I spoke to seems to think she's a lovely girl and was badly treated by Mr. Murphy. I also traced about four of the women he has seen in the past couple of months. The responses were: Cullen Murphy? You're looking for him as well? If you find him, let me know. I've got a bulet with his name on it.. Cullen Murphy? [Door slammed] Cullen? Oh my God, I only just got out of therapy...now I'm going to have to call my shrink again.... Cullen Murphy? That no good Irish shit? No, I do not know where he is, and if I never saw him again it would be too soon... |

Well, I hope that's cured you of your crush on him. He's a total shit, Nat. Just because we defend him, doesn't mean we think he's worth a
damn...that all? Nothing we can use? Surely this Uma has got to have some skeletons in her closet? What is she a fucking saint?

I don't think he's such a bad person. He's just misunderstood. You know, he was telling me the story of his life the other day at lunch..he's
had it so hard...
[Karina rolls her eyes] ...Okay, okay, stay on point, I know. I did get one interesting comment. I talked to a really nice guy at The Phoenix. A sort of gentlemanly Australian guy, quiet and charming. He happens to be Cullen's boss at TOL International. He seems to think very highly of Cullen as an operative. Apparently he is one of their best negotiators. Risks his life regularly for these poor kidnapped expatriates and such. I knew he had good qualities... [Karina gives her a warning look] ...But when I asked this guy if he knew the wife, he seemed to change. He just said, 'Cullen likes the ladies and he's not exactly the world's best husband material - but who could blame him married to her?' It was the only time anyone said a bad word against her. Odd really.... Oh and the guy who bought the Phoenix? The English guy? He's the one Cullen has named as her lover...Maximilian Skinner...but everyone I asked just laughed and said they couldn't stand each other...it was really confusing... Anyway, it's all in the file...will that be all? |
|||

Excellent...Good work, Nat. Keep digging...
[she waits until the door closes then leaps on the file, eager to find the name of the guy who seemed so wary of Uma Murphy. Karina knew enough about human nature to recognise when a man has a reason for disliking a woman. So Cullen's boss knew Uma Murphy well enough to sympathise with Murphy? Karina smiled] Bingo! Got you, Mrs. Murphy. So you were boning your husband's boss behind Murphy's back, eh? Then you dropped him flat as well? Let's see what this guy's name is..he is going to be useful.... [she scans the file, sees the name and gasps...] Terrence Thorne? I don't believe it! [opening her purse, she takes out a business card and turns it over to read: Terrence Thorne....] Terry...I think it's time you and I had dinner... Justice that love gives is a surrender, justice that law gives is a punishment.

[Cullen stands by the window in the waiting room of the legal offices, waiting for his appointment with Karina looking through the photographs for the umpteenth time. He is still amazed, even if it does confirm his suspicions. Just then Natalie comes in. Her face lights up when she sees him...] Hi, gorgeous. You want to see these? My wife and her new boyfriend? It's like sticking a knife in my heart... |

Leon James was a small-time hood when he got his start in the drug trade. Auto theft was his bag,
until he got noticed for his swift work and ability to erase his tracks by a dope dealer named Henry William Ray, who had asked for a particularly
hard-to-attain 1955 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. Ray could have bought it, given his bank account, but there was a slight problem: the one he wanted was not for
sale. Lamenting his problem to a friend who was familiar with Leon James' handwork, he was introduced to the kid, and they lined out a plan for obtaining
the car...
<Looks over a stack of tapes, interviews with certain informants and old friend of Leon James when he was a kid, for one in particular. Listens to the raspy voice of an ex-girlfriend as she explains her take on him> "Some of these guys? They'd call him to come test their alarms, 'cause if he couldn't get around it, no one could. He was smart like that. Could've done computer shit, you know?" <Makes a note of the computer skills, doubting if drugs are the only illegal thing financing James' existence...Nola passes by, and shuts her office door, without a word to anyone. Shuts off the tape, and looks that direction thoughtfully.>

<Memos that have gone ignored or relegated to piles ordered according to importance cover Nola's desk. Meetings with city officials fill her
appointment book, as well as cases pending trial dates. Everyone wants something from her. Isn't that the life she chose- public servant extraordinaire?
Today, she just wants to be left alone. A new note catches her eye, in handwriting she knows well. It wasn't there yesterday...>

Stakeouts suck. Sometimes you get what you need and you can get on about your day, other times, you wait for hours, days, even
months to get even a glimpse of what you're looking for, following up on or snagging those leads that can crack your case, or void it. Today has been one
of the long ones, where life passes by and then turns into a shadow world where nothing is what it seems. The transcript of a confession obtained weeks ago
from a one-time associate of his prey offers up a bit of hope that it won't be a waste of his time, that this is worth his life on hold when he could be
doing other things that hold infinite more possibility...
