If it is isn't that miserable bog-shite Irish husband of mine...what slug trail did you get dragged into town on? I'm surprised you've got the guts to be in the same state as me, let alone the same room...obviously you've no more use for your scrotum then?
[other diners look distinctly uncomfortable. Cullen just smiles sweetly, covers his groin with one hand and carries his beer over to the side of the bar...] Enjoy them while you can...I get off at eleven... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

[The place is finally empty. Cullen stands in the shadows watching as Uma lets herself out the back door, closing it behind her and pulling up the collar of her coat against the cold night air...]
Hey, you got a light? Price of a cuppa tea? Lend me an ear? Uma...I just want to talk. We need to talk, darlin'... It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

Don't call me darling. I don't want to talk to you. If you don't get lost, I'll call the police and have you arrested. Cullen, you are not going to worm your way back this time. I'm warning you...this time it is over. Go away...please, go away...

Hey, are you crying? You know I hate to see you cry. I'm so sorry for being such a bastard...but I love you. I promise this time will be different. I promise I'm ready to settle down and change. Give me one more chance, baby? You know how good we can be together...[he puts his arms around her and draws her head onto his shoulder. Uma sobs quietly...]
It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

[ Uma rushes into their lounge where Cullen is sprawled out on the couch watching ESPN, drinking from a bottle of San Miguel]
![]() Cullen? You heard about Ann? Someone robbed the bank and took her as hostage! We've got to do something! You're an ex-marine. You've got a gun...can't you go and track them down? We have to help her! Ralph is half out of his mind! And you know Ann. I can't imagine her taking captivity lying down. She'll fight them tooth and nail..... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

![]() [he mutters darkly under his breath: they'll be paying us to take that banshee back...I wish them luck with her...] That's outrageous! Poor woman...I'd be up and out of here in a flash if I only could, but unfortunately I must have strained my back last night doing my conjugal duty by you, mavourneen...my spine's seized up. Bring me another beer and I'll see if I can get some life back into it. Now don't worry yourself. Ann's a charming woman and they won't harm her. As soon as the ransom demand comes through, we can start talking. And you know, I'm very good at talking.... It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

[Cullen breathes a sigh of relief when Uma, Kathy and the others take off back to the library...]
![]() By the way, my name's Cullen Murphy....You don't want to listen to me all night, girl...tell me something about yourself...maybe starting with your name...I can't keep calling you darlin'... It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

You can, but "Nola" will probably get an answer. You can call me Monteleone, if you pay your cards right. So far, so good.

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

So what brings you to this neck of the woods? It's not exactly the happening centre of the universe. Somehow I figure you for a more sophisticated sort of woman. City girl. Got to be work...let me guess...model? Actress? Business woman acquaintance of Max Skinner?
Career woman anyway...I can always tell. What do you think I do for a living? What type am I, then, beautiful Nola? ![]() It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

You're the sort of man who asks a lot of questions. I haven't decided if that's so you can hide your shortcomings, or because you're genuinely interested in the person. Probably a bit of both. But you ask all the right questions- the ones designed to draw a person in, and make them reveal themselves before they realize what you are doing. So I'm guessing you either work for the government, or you're a cop.
I'm here for the fresh air, and the peace and quiet. And to recruit talent for my office. |

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

So, you run an office...? Well, if I am a cop, then I'm wondering what kind of service that could mean? Recruiting for your office up here? Hmmm.....that has to narrow down the field... What you in - casting? Aging hippies and Grizzly Adams lookalikes for nostalgia TV series?
I'm not a cop. And no government would have me. Not even me own. Keep guessing...we could be some time, Nola...and as for that fresh air. It goes to your head, you know? There's no telling what an excess of oxygen might do to the brain...or other parts of the body, y'know? Quiet? It's very noisy in here, don't you think? Maybe you could think better outside? It's a beautiful night. There will be stars. And plenty of fresh air...and then you could tell me what I do - and I could go to work on you...I mean, on your professional circumstances... It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

<The fall air does feel good, and it clears the head. The stars are so bright, not dulled by the orange glow of city streetlamps. It's going to be hard to go back to her life. But sooner or later, this jaunt to find what she's looking for is going to come to an end. When it does, then Cullen Murphy is going to be another memory. But until then.>
Let me ask you a question, Cullen. If you don't want to answer it directly, don't worry about it. It's not really material to me one way or the other. Does she care? |
|||
CullenM |
Re: Cullen Murphy | ||
|
[he laughs softly. She didn't expect that.]
It's complicated. She cares. I care. So what the fuck's that got to do with us? This some sort of confession box? Bless me father for I have sinned? That's why you're here with me. Because I'm a sinner. Makes it so much more tempting, huh? Okay, here's another answer. "Did he?" ![]() It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

If he'd cared, I wouldn't be here. If I was going to let that slow me down, same result. We all have our skeletons. I'm just making sure yours aren't going to haunt us in the night.
<She stops and turns to him, taking his face between her hands and kisses him.> I like you, soldier. Show me a good time. |

There's a little inn not too far away. My car's back in the parking lot. I think we should adjourn there. It's discreet and a hell of a lot more conducive than the cold ground or the back seat...and I am so much better at a good time when the ambience is right...
...however, I'm pretty hot stuff even when it's not...[he grins boyishly. It's hard not to find him appealing. He holds his hand out to her...] Nothing to say I can't be a gentleman even in a torrid little moment like this, huh? Continued at the Lodge.. It's not that I'm stupid. Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

Cullen! I'm been worried sick about you! You were looking for Ann? Really? That's so sweet of you...
![]() You look rough. Like you slept in your clothes. Which you obviously did. Go take a hot shower and I'll go make some breakfast for you. Ann's okay. But we have a problem. Someone new's arrived and he's not going to be easy. A train robber from the Wild West called Ben Wade. He was behind her kidnap and the bank robbery...He's bad news... Hey, Cull...want me to come and scrub your back? I'm not due at work for a couple of hours...let's be naughty, hey? There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Re: Cullen Murphy | ||

[he sighs dramatically]
I'm shagged out, darlin'. Let me catch a few hours sleep and maybe I'll have something for you? [he smiles and turns for the bathroom, hoping she leaves him alone. Shagged out is a delicately phrased euphemism, indeed. He can hardly raise his arms, let alone anything else after the night he's had and, in the light of day, is feeling unusually remorseful. He has acted like a total shit. Even if he suspects that if Nola gives him the chance again, he wouldn't do anything differently...but Uma looks so trusting...he can't even look at his wife in the face this morning...and he also suspects Nola dragged her nails down his back...] It's not that I'm stupid. I just don't think sometimes... |
