<The next morning Sophie enters the Bar as soon as it is opened. Grabbing the first newspaper she finds, Sophie settles near a window. She watches as "the dragon" (aka the woman she met the previous day) makes her way to take her order. After the night she had, Sophie is in no mood for bitching. A long day is planned and she must keep her wits and energy for what is coming...>

[Sophie is engrossed in a newspaper when he arrives at the restaurant. He nearly runs into Uma as she's bustling toward the kitchen.
Before she can snap at him, he gives her a grateful smile, begs for coffee, juice and toast. Then tells her what a lovely color her shirt is on her -- and has she lost weight? Whatever, it is so lovely on her that morning. She narrows her eyes at him but doesn't snap. He glances the way she was coming and notices Maximus is in the house. Ah. The cause of Uma's more congenial attitude in that one moment, no doubt. With a smile, he goes to join Sophie.] Good morning, ma'am. You look ready to brave the day. But, I wonder, do you have an open mind? If so, better engage it before we get to Eselan. Continued in Dino's thread ... click here ... ![]() |

You just hold the fire, Terry. Leave it to the sheriff's office for now. Don't see exactly what you think you're gonna do that's different. We wait and we talk. Thought that was your specialty? But if we need some more experience, we'll know where to find it. And we do appreciate you all standing by...

[The sheriff was right, the bar is full of people. The place is obviously charged with tension and testosterone but she tries not to let them impress her too much and makes a bee line for the bar. She has never been a waiter before but will do her best to learn fast. ]

![]() Good God, it's you. About time too! Claribelle or something, isn't it? Look, grab an apron and get behind the bar will you, love? We can talk later. There's been a bit of a drama in town today. Some local woman's been kidnapped unfortunately. Well, in my case I might be inclined to say fortunately... she's a bit of nuisance, to be honest. Simply refuses to evacuate her business premises...maybe the robbers might just have inadvertently done me a favour...not to mention the crowd in here tonight. Nothing raises the profits like a bit of local tragedy, hey? [he smiles gleefully] Every cloud has a silver lining...it's an ill wind that blows nobody good....all that rot, hey? [he leads a startled Clarity over to the bar] Ah, Paul? This young lady here is called Clementine or something. She's French. She's going to help you behind the bar. Don't worry if she can't understand your wretchedly working class English....Just shout loudly at her...they eventually work it out, I have found... Winning isn't everything - it's the only thing... |

Right you are, guv...I'll just reinforce cross channel misperceptions that all English people are ignorant yobs...seeing as in your case they are.... Hallo, love! You were in earlier, I think, with the sheriff. Just take your time. Anything you don't understand, just ask me and I'll get it for you. The prices are all on the till so just bang the drink code in. Oh, that's Uma over there. She's sort of a waitress. Well, I think that's her job description but she doesn't actually do much waiting. The concept of customer service is lost on her.... [Uma and Kathy tag along with me, all of us heading for the bar. When we enter, I can see that the guys Uma called are all accounted for except for White and Grant.
I commandeer the table where Maximus and Aubrey sit, off in a corner. The others begin shifting toward us as I look them over.] Look, here's the thing. Between us, we got the talent and the know-how to mount a search. But we also got to think about where we look that the cops haven't yet. And contacts, right? We got contacts that maybe wouldn't talk to cops but would talk to us. I say we get White and Grant back over here. With Biebe, they can organize the search so we check where the cops haven't got the manpower, right? Uma, Kathy -- can you get on the horn to White and Grant? I know White was checking in with the Carmel detectives and I think Grant was making contact with the FBI field office. See if they come back here. Thorne, O'Leary -- surely your crew has got contacts in low places? You think maybe you can start working them up? Find out who this might be? Where they might head? I'm open to suggestions. But with or without you, I'm gonna do something. I'd just like to do it smart. Floor's open. Who's got ideas? [It is a good sign that Ralph is agitated and wanting to do something, anything. The bad thing about it is, he's too close to this. He can't be the one calling the shots.
I trade a look with Terry. There's nothing worse than rushing around just to be rushing -- and that's where Ralph's head is. The thing about Ralph is that, with his military background, he's not going to just sit by and do nothing. If this were him against an identified target, I'd send him in with no concerns because he's got what it takes. But I know more than he does about what it takes when you're up against an unseen, unknown entity. We have to wait until we know more. We have to wait until we have a target. But maybe he's right about a few things. Maybe there are things we can do that make Ralph feel he's done all he can if things go bad.] Hey, Ralph. I think you got a good point. Let's wait on White and Grant -- see what they've learned. We've already got our San Francisco office working on turning up who might know something helpful to us. The aim is that we let whoever took her know that if they deal with us and not the authorities, they'll make money and they won't run any risk, right? That's got to be our goal -- to get her back. This is our business and you can count on us to pull out the stops. But, there's something more important that only you can do, Ralph. You need to work with me and Terry on a strategy for negotiating her release. We need to talk money but there're other things, too, right? ![]() |

Jesus, O'Leary. She's no damned unknown hostage. She's my sister. I'll pay whatever they want. I'll fucking sell the store to asshat Skinner if that's what it takes.
Don't look at me like that, cuz I know you'll say that's what they're counting on -- and that this is why you and the Thorne are the ones to negotiate. Fine. I concede. But first they gotta make contact, right? That's a long shot, in my mind. In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. ~~~Albert Camus |

[My voice is purposely ultra calm, soothing -- but firm. He needs to know I've heard him, that we all have, that we all understand the stakes. I wish this didn't feel so rehearsed, so second nature to me ...]
Man, she's not a faceless hostage to any of us. Okay? She's one of us and if you think we won't pull out every stop to get her back ... well, let's just admit that we're all here because we plan to do anything and everything to get her back. You got a lot of friends who can help you, Ralph. Let us do what we do best, eh? We need you to stay focused -- you be the leader but let us be the grunts doing what needs doing? ![]() |

Re: The Phoenix Bar and Grill

Yeah, yeah. White's already given me the 'stay focused' speech.
Okay. I know you're right. But just ... do something. Let me do something. [Just then, White walks through the doors. He moves so softly sometimes that it's freaky since he's such a bull of a man. Maximus clears his throat and assumes command. He briefs White on what the discussion's been, on what Thorne and O'Leary are doing, what I have in mind -- and while he's talking, I find myself taking a seat and just listening to the way he puts it all together. Like it makes sense somehow. And I realize I'm responding to the bond I share with Maximus -- we're both Army men. I think the way he lays things out, it is a way that lets me see more logically, more calmly. When he finishes with the recap, he asks White if there is any news on his end. White just shrugs; nothing. They've moved the roadblocks about an hour ago to north of Monterey, following some substantiated leads that has the van heading toward the main highway from where they can go anywhere they want. But they haven't found them yet. Maximus says it would appear they have gone to ground. Or they're already far away.] In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. ~~~Albert Camus |

Re: The Phoenix Bar and Grill

...what would you do in the circumstances? It's hard to evade the notice of someone if you are carrying an unwilling hostage. The news coverage has put out an alert; any unusual activity will be noted. I don't believe they have had the time to get completely away, not unless they had planned for this in advance which looks increasinly unlikelt.
Most likely the taking of a hostage was done in response to some spur of the moment decision. It does not appear to have been a wise move. No one was intervening to stop them - so why did they need the complications of a member of the public who could also be a liability - and will be able to recognise them. The robbery was a slick action. They do not seem to be amateurs. Does anyone else here find the kidnapping rather odd? Could we be missing something? Now we are free... |
