"Oh my god ... " Franki's voice takes on a hysterical tinge, giggling and snuggling the little dog while trying to avoid serious Dog Breath.
"What has he been feeding you? Italian food?" That's the word her composure cracks on, as she remembers the one meal she ever cooked for Bud and
her spoiled rotten darling. "I will not cry," she mutters, struggling to keep her balance while she stands, holding on to her dog and reining back
all her other concerns.

Franki can focus well enough to thank Kathy, obviously she must have found Spookers and thought to bring her here to try and get in touch with Bud. But
Franki's edgy, all nerves now, flying on no sleep and enough fear to float the titanic. She tolerates Sheriff Biebe almost-but-not-quite pushing her to
sit down at the booth next to John and Kathy. But she stonewalls him when he starts the 'let me help' spiel, shaking her head and veering right back
to playing innocent. John Biebe's too much a gentleman to really push her buttons, or so she figures. The redheaded detective, on the other hand,
he's going to be a problem.

Kathy has just swallowed her last bite when things seem to escalate. But Franki storms away, making a beeline for their table of all things.
After Ann's yell that someone should shut up the dog, both her and John have tried to do just that - in vain. Now the little furball has had enough, she pulls on her leash so hard that John has to let her go before she strangles herself. With a "woof" she jumps up in Franki's lap, licking her face, wagging her tail a mile a minute, barking and whining happily. "Princess no, stay!" Kathy quickly gets up to pull the dog back. She stops in her movement, when she realizes Franki is half laughing, half crying and calling Princess Spooky. "Spooky?" "There you are my little girl. I've missed you so much. I found you! Where have you been?" Kathy looks to John for help who has gotten up from his seat too. He clears his throat, "Hello. We call her Princess. She is Bud White's dog and we're taking care of her until he comes back from the hospital. I assume you know him? And you know this dog too?" Franki looks up for the first time. Whiping her eyes she grins, "Princess? Yes that suits her. But she isn't Bud's dog - though she loves him..." Her voice falters before she goes on, "she's mine. We were at Bud's house when he...had his accident. Her name is Spooky." "Your dog? But.. but Terry and Richie never mentioned that. They called me and asked me to watch her. You were there? At Bud's house?" Kathy looks a bit unsure but then, "oh. OH! You mean you and Bud...ah. Okay then. So she's yours huh? Spooky is her name? She is a very nice dog." John steps forward, "now wait a minute Kathy. How do we know for sure that Princess is her dog? Maybe we should call Bud to confirm this." Kathy shakes her head, "no need. Look at her." Spooky's eyes have never left her owner lest she lose her again. "She is hers. That's why she's been barking the whole time, she could hear her voice. I guess we have to say goodbye to Mrs. Princess-Spooky. Sorry about that scratch on her nose, she tried to pick an argument with one of our cats and Tabby was not impressed. She ate enough for three of her size today, so no need to feed her. She might be thirsty though. This one," she points at John "has fed her all kinds of treats from our dinner. She has a soft spot for him, the little flirt." Franki smiles distractedly and thanks them both for taking care of Spooky. John is not happy with the way things are going, but even he can see that Kathy is right. He watches while Kathy strokes the dog and gives her a kiss on the head, "bye little one. If you ever need a place for her for a couple of days, we'll be glad to take her. For free of course." Spooky sniffs John's legs, puts her front paws up on his shin, wags her tail and licks his hand while he too strokes her head. This human was one of the nice ones. The woman too, but the man had a warm voice, knew exactly the spots where she liked to be tickled and fed her good things. Not bad at all. John Biebe finally takes Franki and Spooky away to another booth. "Okay, that was a happy end I suppose." John nods, "yes I guess you are right. She was very cute though for a dog that size." Kathy moves over and snuggles against his side, "yep and now you'll have to make do with just me again. And the three monsters at home of course." ![]()

Clarity is back behind the bar now, as Max asked her, and serving Cullen who is sipping steadily drink after drink. God, those Irishmen sure can hold their liquor!
She witnesses Max, Uma and Cullen's exchanges and is quite sure that Cullen is already past any loitering with intend of getting on Max's nerves. In spite of Max' efforts to sound and look cool, Cullen has obviously already got there... on Max' nerves... and quite masterfully.
From the corner of her eye, she watches John still deep into his job, showing a calm authority she didn't really know… but had a glimpse of, very pleasantly, on the day before. But yet there is in him, even when involved very seriously in his job and meaning business, a softness he can hardly hide, at least when a woman is concerned, as it is the case right now.
She can't really fathom this Franki girl. She looked like a tough girl when she was almost fighting with Ann, and now, she's looking at John and Dino, with big innocent eyes, holding desperately her little dog that is now very quiet. But it's true that Ann, who has a golden heart, wasn't exactly a softy either when they were arguing.
Whether the girl is trouble or in trouble, Dino and John will handle this for the best, that's sure. She hopes that Ann will be okay too. What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.

What the hell was she thinking, coming back here? She must be crazy. Even if he is here, Jack's hardly likely to welcome her back
with open arms, not after the way she ran out on him and then ignored his calls. anyway, a guy like him is hardly likely to be short of female company for
long.
She wishes she'd had the courage to go ahead and change her her hair colour. Red is so conspicuous. Get a grip, girl! He's probably not even here! He's a sailor. He's probably cruising round the Bahamas or sailing some billionaire to the Caymans. Probably. Maybe. What the hell is she doing, coming back here.....?

"But she was the perfect dog for me," John Nash finally tells Kathy. He looks over at her, his bottom lip poked out just a little bit. "I've
decided it wasn't a very happy ending after all, Miss Ginger."
Kathy doesn't seem to know what to say. John sighs. It's very deep and very dramatic. "I believe that I deserve a lot of special attention until I can put this behind me," John pronounces. He waits a few beats before daring to sneak a look at Miss Ginger. Is she buying this? Her lips are pursed; she's studying her fingers as they rest on the table. "How else is a man to ever get over losing the perfect woman?" Kathy's eyes go round and she jerks around until she's looking directly in John's eyes. Her hands go on her hips. "The perfect woman? Let me just tell you, John Nash, that you ..." "Yes?" He asks this as he does his best to look down at Kathy with such an innocent look on his face. "I'm what?" "You are a horrible man to say such a thing to the woman you love! That's what you are!" He can't stand it any longer and finally he's laughing so hard that he's crying. Kathy smacks his arm. He sobers up enough to say, "You should have seen your face!" "That wasn't very nice, John," Kathy says but by now she's laughing, too, but mainly it's because John is so funny to watch while he's laughing. Eventually they both calm down. They finish their meal and as they do, Kathy tells John about the booth she'll have at the Library's grand opening festival. But she notices he's distracted. When she asks, he shrugs. "Seems quite illogical that if this woman Franki was with Bud White when he had his accident that Terry and Richie would have left the dog in her care. Her story strikes me as having a low probability of being based totally on the facts." |
|||
SheriffBiebe |

Franki had done her best to win John Biebe over with her big eyes and timid act. John didn't buy it. He'd seen her around this place often enough
to know she was no shy violet who'd let Ann intimidate her. But something very wrong was going on in her life right now, that was for sure. Starting with
Bud being in the hospital and then her apparently losing her little dog and then Ann accusing her of doing things against the group.
He listens to her oddly disjointed story of how Ann just attacked her for no reason and now she's so shook up she can't even answer another question and who are they to keep asking her so many questions when they can see she's the one who's done nothing wrong ...
Finally he gives Dino a look across the table. John has known from the moment Dino sat down at the table that Dino wants a clear hand here -- and that
he wants to do whatever it is he's going to do with Franki without a lawman sitting there. There's a tension in Dino that John can recognize but then
he's known him long enough to catch it. Probably Franki's not yet picked up that it's Dino who'll prove the tough mark. There's really not
a whole lot John can do at this point. Tomorrow, maybe he'll drop in on Ann to find out if this girl Franki is really someone he needs to keep an eye on.
But for now, he opts to give Dino a clear field.
"Not the important ones.."

Now, the dinner in Monterey he's just left with his latest customer had gone on a bit too long. And, really, Jack had made only the tiniest joke about how his host's daughter's fine cleavage was surely too sweet to be called the Valley of Evil because... Jack smiles and shakes his head ruefully. He was sure that bon mot would have come out quite the cleverest of any he'd delivered if it hadn't been for the choking sound the girl's father started making at that point. That rather distracted Jack from his point, he thought, and made it dreadful difficult to resurrect the joke. Never one to take one penny when a dime would buy a baker's dozen, Jack felt it was it just as well the evening broke up so quickly. There'd been a decided lack of comely wenches in the restaurant where his customer had hosted the send-off dinner. In two days time, Jack and his small crew would leave and sail the man's boat to Cabo San Lucas. His new customer and his family would meet them there, where the family planned to keep the boat moored permanently at their home there. Before he left on that sail to Cabo, Jack intended to have a proper send-off and leave behind a few women sure to pine for him until his return. And to find the right sort of comely lovelies, Jack had headed straight for the Phoenix. It had rarely failed him in the past.
He enters the Phoenix and surveys the room for likely candidates. A suitable number return his grin.. Good, good! He rubs his hands and walks relatively evenly toward the bar. "Paul! My good man! What have you to quench the my dry throat? Quickly now, I'm as parched as ever a man can be!" But before Paul can serve him, Jack notices a bright splash of color and a familiarly stunning breast reflected in the mirror. Jack turns and looks down the bar. Something turns inside as he realizes who it is. Angel, he whispers inside his bruised heart. ![]() |

Dino, finally alone with Franki, looks across the table at her.
She meets his eyes and he knows now she is ready to deal with him. "Now, before you start playing me, let me just make sure you understand the stakes here, Franki. We know where you've been the last few months and under what name you were serving time. That's for starters." Franki's eyes sharpen and she holds on to Spooky tighter. Dino smiles at her but it's the kind of smile that makes him look dangerous. "I've known Ann for a lot of years. So I already know that whatever happened her tonight, she's not lying when she tells me she thinks you're up to something bad. We don't like that kind of thing happening on our turf. On the other hand, she could be wrong and, more importantly, we also don't like to have any of our friends hurt. Follow me now: I already now that if Sergei Peterson is looking for you, he's going to hurt you. So the only question I got that I really need an answer to right now is this: are you Bud's friend or not? Because if you're his friend, then you're ours, too. And I'm prepared to offer you protection while we negotiate with Sergei. It's the only offer you're going to get that's going to save your pretty neck, Franki. So be smart here, okay? What's it gonna be?" ![]() |

"I didn't hurt him, if that's what you mean. I don't know how he busted his arm. I was just there to get my dog." She's picking her
way through a minefield just now, tired and not yet able to let go of her anger with Ann. Letting Wade get under her skin, that was her mistake. That and
thinking any job done for Sergei was going to be simple. There must have been something in that car he had her pick up in Mexico City, something he hadn't
wanted her to know about. Or Wade had arranged something that made Sergei think she wasn't on the up and up anymore.
"And, quick as I am, I just haven't had time to get up to something bad" She rolled her eyes a little, "so Ann will have to look somewhere else to figure out whose fault it all is." Sergei ... that was a bad place to be in, wondering how to get out of Sergei's bad graces without losing what little she had. And a bunch of guys in a bar and the World's Only Honest Cop thought they could keep the Russian from getting to her? That would be funny if it weren't so scary. "And yeah, Sergei might be looking for me. Might be. But if he is, it's either because of Wade ... or her." She didn't have any reason to actually trust any of this bunch, whether or not she liked them. But Franki supposed she could talk to Bud about it, once he was up and around again. |

"Can you really afford to pass up our help?" Dino has listened intently to Franki -- to what she's said and what she hasn't. He can see
she's about ready to fall over now that the adrenalin rush is gone. In its place is raw nerves and the inability to process fear.
He pulls a business card from his wallet and slides it across to her. It's sleek and discreet. Just what will Franki make of the high-tech look of "TOL Risk Management and Security Services" as printed on this card? Dino watches her study it, one finger touching just the edge as if she's not wanting him to realize she's curious. "Has Bud told you about us, Franki? By us, I mean either about his special group of friends around here ... or about the kind of work Terry Thorne and I are engaged in?" Franki shakes her head. It's almost belligerent. Dino figures she hates the feeling of being at the disadvantage of not having all the facts. So he gives her a brief description of the work the company does. As he does, he sees a light click on behind her tired eyes. He smiles and says, "So, maybe you can see, when I say we're prepared to offer you a safe place to stay, we're capable of keeping you out of Sergei's line of sight ... for a while. We just need a few days -- just to check on what he's really aiming to do. Like you say, it's all speculation at this point that he's going to be looking for you. He may have already written Wade off." Now, Dino reaches over and puts a hand over Franki's under the pretense of forcing his business card into her hand. "How about this? Let me drive you to the hospital. You need some time to visit Bud -- and while you're there, you can ask him about us. Then, when you're satisfied, I'll take you to the safe house we'll have set up by then. If you need things, we'll get them for you. If you need to go places while you're staying there, I'll have someone take you so we know you're safe. But one thing, Franki. At some point, you're gonna have to come clean with Bud. Don't force us to be the ones to give him what we've dug up. He's the kind of guy who wants you to give up your own bad news to him. And then he can put it straight in his mind." Dino's voice is soft when he tells her this. He doesn't want it to be an attack on her -- just his own belief he has to say this kind of thing when he feels like sticking his nose in someone else's business. ![]() |

"Thought you were a cop." She keeps checking out the card. It's slick, printed on expensive stock, raised and glossy print. All in all,
it's quality. And she judges it's for real. "Bud showed me his movie ...I never got around to asking the rest of you, but he told me
stuff." Not that though, and it makes Franki wonder if Bud thought she'd go sniffing after Red or Thorne just because of their jobs. It raises a
tired chuckle though as she visualizes asking them for a job. As if they'd ever hire her.
"Tell you something about the Russian; he might be looking for me, he might not. But if Wade is just gone and not dead, Sergei is looking for him. He likes thinking he's got a hold on people, takes it real bad if things get away from him. And he runs practically everything ... including bent cops." That tweaks a thought for Franki. She knows Bud's clean, trusts his judgement where Richie and John are concerned. But maybe she shouldn't have gone to the station, no tell who knows now, that Bud is laid up. It would be nice to just talk to Bud, tell him about Spooky's Big Adventure ... tell him that she'll be more careful about the next job. No more mystery deliveries for the Russian. Spooky's human is tired, but the doggy diva is nothing of the sort. She's curious and goes to investigate everything including the red-haired man in the suit. She trots across the table to sniff delicately at his suit, his hands, before barking once and seating herself in front of her human with an expectant expression. Franki snickered. "Well, now that my boss there has weighed in with her opinion, I guess that settles it. Guess we better go by the hospital."

<She's just thinking about maybe abandoning her bar stool for one of the more secluded quieter tables when an all-too-familiar
voice booms out over the top of rest of the noise. She doesn't even need to look to know who it is...>
"Paul! My good man! What have you to quench the my dry throat? Quickly now, I'm as parched as ever a man can be!" Jack ... <She freezes, torn between approaching him, and making as quick and dignified an exit as she can. She should make the first move, try to salvage something. She is, after all, the one in the wrong. But this isn't the time or place for the kind of conversation she needs to have with him. If he'll even speak to her, that is. She finishes her drink, grabs her purse and stands, mind made up. The most direct route to the door ... goes right by him. No way can she avoid him.> Knew I should've gone brunette. |

"Yes you might be right. But it's none of our business. Looks like you won't lose sight of your dog diva though. She'll be around." Kathy
hears the bark from the other booth. "Don't be surprised if you have to share her attention, I bet she already has her cute little eyes on Dino."
Kathy waves to Jack who has greeted them. "He looks like he's already had some drinks." She watches Cullen approach a woman that looks vaguely familiar to her. That will go over well, she thinks dryly. Cullen picking up women right under Uma's nose in the bar that Max owns. They were divorced so why does he keep coming back? Well, that's something else that isn't her business and Cullen was always quite a sight for sore eyes... "Want to leave? I want to shop for some groveries so I can back some muffins for Bud. I want to visit him. I can bring some things to the hospital store." John nods, "now about that special attention I said I needed...." "No problem honey, I'll bake you some dog cookies while I make the muffins for Bud. Maybe then you won't miss her so much anymore."

Unsure quite what was right to do, Jack Aubrey took a step back when Angel rose from her seat -- he could see her hesitate as she realized she'd have to
walk right past his stool to get out of the Phoenix. Truth be told, he was feeling a bit like snubbing Angel -- like he should turn the frigid shoulder in her
direction. After all, she'd not even bothered to take the baby out of the bathwater before she chased around the other bush, had she?
But in taking that step back, Jack felt his boot clomp down on the man sitting behind him. Damned clumsy! So he turned quickly to apologize and as he did he knocked the man's beer splashing down the slick bar. Alarmed at the escalation of his clumsiness, Jack had reached his long arm out to try to retrieve the beer before it upended. And wouldn't you know it? There he was, leaning over, his ass poking right up as if it had not a care in the world right in Angel's direction just as she reached where he was ... and he was fumbling for some red-faced yubel's beer mug like a damned squeaker ... and he hears Cullen Murphy stepping right in to flirt outrageously with the woman who has Jack Aubrey feeling like a boy in pigtails! Regaining a bit of his boldness along with his indignation that his childish pride may have given the field to Murphy, Jack rounds on the two of them ... to find Cullen smirking at Angel and Angel blushing in Cullen's direction while she gives Jack a most curious look. "God take your soul, Murphy! Is no beautiful woman safe when you are within sniffing distance? Be off with you before I forget I'm a gentleman. This lady does not wish for your company." Jack is red in his face -- and it's not all from alcohol. "In point of fact, the lady's dance card is already filled -- by me. Now if you'll take your Irish soul out of our sights, I shall escort Miss Angel to a booth." Cullen puts his hands up and backs away, grinning at the scene Jack's made. Jack clears his throat twice and finally gives Angel a half bow. She stands there, her pretty mouth open just a tiny bit in surprise at this turn of events. All Jack can think just then is that if she doesn't close those precious lips, he may take a sip at the fountain ... Finally, he gathers his wits and his manners. "If you have not eaten your dinner yet, Angel, it would be my greatest pleasure if you would be my guest ..." Jack gestures toward the restaurant. He is hopeful ... ![]() |
