[Just then, I hear the sound of Maximus out his back door, stamping off the dust from his shoes before he comes in.]
Ann, you're right. I have treated you horribly. I'll make amends. I promise you, the moment Maximus releases me, I'll get you your money. If I can't get the deposit bag back, I'll pay it all in cash. Would that be acceptable? Look, I better go. I promised Maximus I'd finish watching this film before he returns. I've enjoyed our chat but I have a duty to attend to. Until we meet again, Ann ... [I hang up on her before she can answer. And I'm back in my chair, clicking the DVD back to life, when Maximus enters.] I'm not sure I'm processing it all very well, Maximus. You're right -- it's difficult to absorb in one go. How did you do it? What you came from was much worse than anything I've faced ... Even bad men love their mommas... |

Happy New Year, Ann. I haven't seen much of you recently. You look well - if a little unsteady on your feet...[he extends a hand to steady her]. I trust you are fully recovered from your ordeal and that Wade continues to behave himself? I hope he hasn't bothered you since...
![]() Come, share a glass with me and we will toast the New Year. Everyone else seems occupied, including your friend. Is Roberts a wise choice for her? What is that saying you have about frying pan and fire? But then, we are talking of Uma, hey? She is incorrigible. That is her charm. Even if the rest of us have to continually be there to catch her when she falls...[he smiles fondly and shakes his head] As for Ralph, well, allow him a little licence tonight, perhaps? Maybe what he most needs for a change is a bad woman, hmmm? [Max grins playfully Now I must be off...take care, Ann...I wish you all the best for this new year. May Janus watch over us all... Now we are free... |

[I watch Maximus walk off. What is wrong with me? I practically threw myself at him! He didn't even notice.]
Man, that's embarrassing. Not even a kiss. Well, he's not my type anyway! So there. [My chin high, I toddle out of the bar in as straight a line as I can manage and go home, alone to greet the new year.] |

![]() [she enters the cool interior of the wine cave with its flagged floor, rough stone walls and wood panelling. At the long curving counter circling the floor to ceiling wineracks, she pauses and looks about her, ringing a small bell] ![]() Anyone in? [Muted voices from the office behind the counter tell her someone is there. She calls again and rings the bell a few more times. A pretty woman comes out, carrying a cup of coffee...] ![]() Sorry! Didn't hear you! Can I help? [Uma stares. She hadn't expected the shop girl to be quite that pretty... Was Max involved with her? She immediately feels crestfallen. She shouldn't have come here... ] ![]() Oh! Hallo! Em....I was looking for someone else actually. Is Mr. Cooper around, only I was wanting to speak to him actually... Re: Maximus

Uma? Is that you?
![]() [Max steps in the room, smiling, apparently pleased to see her. It makes her feel a little less tense although she is aware the other woman is watching her closely] I heard what happened. I'm very sorry. The man's insufferable. But I'm very pleasd you came here. People were worried about you. Come on in, let's have a cup of coffee. Kristina? We'll finish up later, with your permission... Now we are free... |

Re: Maximus | ||

Maximus? Oh it's so good to see you! Thanks, coffee would be lovely....
[when they are seated inside the office beyond, Maximus closes the door, pours out two cups and sets them down on the desk. Then he waits, watching her with a kindly expression. 'Uma? What brings you here? Why do you seek me out alone of all the others?"] I want to ask you a big favour. A really big favour but if it isn't convenient, I understand... [she looks back towards the shop, obviously making a reference to the woman beyond. Max does not answer or attempt to explain, but waits for her to continue...] Max, I've had twenty four hours to think and I've decided I don't want to leave the area. I don't want Max Skinner to drive me away. And I don't want Ben Wade to cause any more mayhem. Somehow I feel its important I stay close. But there isn't much for me in the area. I've no money and... Re: Maximus

....thus you need some employment? Are you here to ask for a job?
![]() [He sees her wince. She's embarrassed to be so desperate. This is so wrong. Of all women, she deserves to be settled and secure. That damn husband of her needs castrating...thank the Gods there were no children. That would make her position even worse now...Uma nods, her eyes lowered, pulling at the edges of the shimmering green silk dress she is wearing. It amuses him. Even now she dresses to seduce. She can't help herself. And it is hard for a man not to keep his eyes from wandering with such a woman...] Of course, I can offer you work. The shop is in need of extra staff. Kristina has a family and can only manage a few hours in the morning when the boys are off at school. Afternoons and early evening? You are familiar with the hospitality industry. You'd be ideal. And I was thinking of perhaps hosting special events from time to time, like gourmet dinners or concerts with wine and cheeses...I think you and I could work together very well...what do you think? Now we are free... |

Re: Maximus | ||

Bloody hell, did you just say yes? Are you nuts? I'm an absolutely hopeless employee. But I am determined to try and knuckle down and do a good job this time. Oh, Max! You are such a darling!
[She throws her arms around him; he winces slightly and unwinds her from him] Oops, sorry! I was a little over-enthusiastic there. But you have no idea how much this means to me! So, I won't be working with Barbie, or whatever her name is? Good because I tell you now she'll hate me. She'll presume I'm after you. Which I am not. Because I've given up men and sex and everything related. Just thought you might prefer to know that... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Re: Maximus | ||

Well, I suppose I should be relieved to hear that. [he grins]
Uma, you should try to be civilised towards Kristina. I do not want any of that ridiculous female behaviour...Do you need somewhere to stay? There is a small flat above the wine shop. We could clear it out and you could make use of it... Now we are free... |

Re: Maximus | ||

....er...thanks but no need to go to all that trouble for me. Actually I've already got a place to stay. A room in a house not too far from here. I'll be fine. Thanks anyway. You wouldn't want me on the premises anyway. I'd probably drink all your wine...and how could you keep your private life private with me nosing around and listening at key holes? And you know I would...
[she winks playfully and Maximus tsks. However he neither confirms nor denies her assumption that Maximus and the pretty - but rather ungroomed - blonde were probably rather more than just colleagues...Just wait until Ann hears this, Uma thought. ...] So, should I start tomorrow? Re: Maximus

Afternoon, Kristina...just leaving? How's Uma settling in?
![]() Kristina gives him a sour look: 'Just great. Look, Maximus, if there's something I should know, just tell me okay? It's not like we're dating or anything...just sleeping together, you know?' ![]() Something you should know? About what? Kristina, have I done something to upset you? Wait...let me think...what has Uma said? How can I put this? She has a fertile imagination as well as not being famed for her tolerance towards other women whom she presumes are on her territory... 'That so? So, there's is something going on then, huh? You're her territory now, that it? Why don't you just come out and say it? You've got a new bedmate. A little English miss....well, you're welcome to her. She'll give you hell. I'm off home. See you in the morning...' [He sighs as he watches her drive off. Somehow he knew Uma would be making her mark before long...] Now we are free... |

Re: Maximus | ||
![]() Maximus! You're here! I am so busy. I've reorganised everything. That silly girl hasn't a clue. Has she gone yet..? Bloody hell, does she not possess a decent outfit of clothes? Maybe I should give her some of my cast offs? That hippy chicky look is so old especially on a woman her age... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Re: Maximus | ||
![]() Uma...you've been very naughty. Kristina is not to be upset. Do not pretend that you and I are in some way involved. I will not stand for this nonsense of women bitching and bickering behind my back. Why are you all so difficult? Has the concept of working together never evolved in the female brain? From now on, will you promise me to work with her not against her? Now we are free... |

Don't put that face on, Maximus. You know it just makes me worse. Come on, you can do better than her. Miles better...Work together. What do you think we are, the bloody barbarian horde?
Okay, don't pout like that. I haven't wee'd on your feet. I will try to be nice to Kristina...but you better tell her to be nice to me, the cow... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Are you sure its a good idea?
<Standing in front of Mr. Coopers gate, Sophie takes Terrys hand and grabs it firmly. Her apprehension is real but overacted. Could her lover reason with a man who has shown as much determination as potential violence? She had to trust her feelings: Terry wasnt a man to trifle with as his instinct force him to always take the side of the apparent weaker person. Sophie waits for Terry to take her into his arms protectively. It would be the first image that Maximus will have when hell see them. The message couldn't be clearer: Im under his protection. Try to get to me, Cooper and youll be in serious trouble> |

With this man, direct is the only way, I assure you.
Come on...we're not going to back out now... [he takes her hand and walks across the courtyard towards the winery shop and business offices. Entering, he instinctively puts his arm around her...and has quite a surprise...] You? What the hell are you doing here? Where's Maximus? I'm for real,mate |

Re: Maximus | ||

Around somewhere. Why? You want to buy wine, that's my job...obviously you haven't heard the latest news. Skinner sacked me but Maximus was hiring. So here I am. Your friendly neighbourhood sommelier..
Obviously, I haven't heard the latest news either...[she looks at Sophie clinging onto Terry with a withering gaze] Don't suppose anything here would be good enough for your delicate little French palate, would it...? You on the staff now at TOL - or just the entertainment? [ she smiles sweetly at Sophie] There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Just give your tongue a rest will you? And your dirty mind a holiday... Tell Maximus we want to see him. And don't even think of asking me why. It's none of your business....So, Skinner finally wised up, did he? Smart guy. Maximus must be having a bad day. I always thought he was a better judge of character than that...
...[he returns her smile with a patronising one of his own. Sophie glances across surprised at Terry's tone. He never speaks to women like that...How odd...] I'm for real,mate |

Re: Maximus | ||

<What could that pest have possibly done to Terry that could push him to attack her so strongly? It must have been really bad and she hated the slut even more. Forgetting for a second why she came here, Sophie looks at the girl in disdain...>
It's a wonder Mr. Cooper lets you work in the winery shop. Apparently he's not afraid of your pony scent spoiling the fine goods here...didn't know mustard gas was sold as perfume nowadays... <Sophie moves her free hand before her nose as to drive away the bad scent. Her perfume is far too strong for the closed place. By the smell of it, it certainly is an old perfume she inherited from an dead aunt...> ![]() |
