Nola's a challenge. That chick you're talking about was built like a water buffalo. I was doing good just to find it. I'm not too sure you went home with a woman, baby.

Not a woman? What is that supposed to mean? It bloody well wasn' t a bloke.
Was it? [he shudders] Was I really that blotto? What did Nola say? About what? Me being hungover and late? Nothing complimentary, that's for sure. About you? Not a lot. She seemed more interested in this new guy, Ben Wade....you losing your touch? Better get that seen to... |

Re: Richie Roberts | ||

A man like Richie Roberts, Casanova tendencies aside, is a man to be admired- if the DVD is anything to go from. It's only based on a true story- who knows what the real Richie is like. But the man on the screen in front of me is exactly what Jack said he might be- the investigator I am looking to staff. A course in the last 30 years of advancement in world views might be a start.
<She rewinds and plays again several scenes, making notes on a pad and shaking her head in amusement.> I don't understand their world- all those men who look like each other, their origins and how they came here. I don't know if I really want to. But the clues to their personalities are there, and the invitation to examine them open, thanks to Jack. Taking it leaves the question of how far deep do I want to get into their lives and their dealings? These people will be insular, even if a few of them go astray from law and order. They will protect their own. <She picks up the phone and dials.> |

As long as it's only an impression, Richie baby. I'm in the market for one with a few dirty habitsto be perfectly frank. I've had it with being the victim. I'll be here for you. <Leans across the bar so only she can hear what he says next. This might not be the best thing for her right now, and he's not really one to take advantage of a woman when she's down> Listen. Whatever happens, happens. If it doesn't, no sweat. No pressure. No promises. Are we cool?

[The Christmas party at Ralph's is in full swing. She slips back to Richie; he slides an arm round her and pull her close, nuzzling against her neck playfully. Uma whispers...]
I think I'll get off home, Richie. Last night was great. More than great. Today was just what I needed. But I think I want to be alone now. Stay and have some fun. There's a lot of nice girls here, one's without problems...I wouldn't blame you if you found another bed for the night, you know? You don't owe me anything, baby... ..but the back door will be open if you want to come up later... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Answer the phone, Richie....answer the bloody phone...!
Richie? That you? It's me. What's the matter? Did I wake you up? You sound groggy...listen, I want to ask you a really big favour... ...I'm at a sort of business dinner and the 'client' is being a bit difficult...He seems to presume shagging me is part of the deal. I'm a bit scared of him, to be honest. I was just wondering if you could be at my place in about an hour. If he sees a guy there, he'll back off...I know it's a bit of a liberty to get you out of bed for this, but...please, Richie. I'm really begging you...I want to see you anyway. You can stay over, you know that...I haven't see you for days... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart... |

Yeah? Uma? What the fuck are you getting into now? I'll be there in a few minutes...soon as find my pants... Let go, baby. Richie has to go to work... <Fumbles with the handset and the arms and legs that wrap around him in a bid to make him stay> Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

Come on, Richie...fancy a night cap?

<Watches Wade leave until he's out of sight, not missing the hard glint in the guy's eye when he realizes he's been played. There's no real case on him yet, and he's not threatened anyone. All a guy can do is watch and wait. But it's another note in the file, another image to tack to the bulletin board in his mind. But for now, there's Uma to take care of. Stands at the bottom of the stairs, a hand on the rail, one foot resting on the first step. Picks at a piece of splintered board.>

Re: Richie Roberts | ||

[Uma has already begun to climb the stairs when she hears his comment. Spinning round, she clatters back down again, running after him across the parking lot]
Richie! What's up? Are you angry with me? [she stops and grimaces as she begins to look at this from his point of view] I wasn't using you. I mean, well, I was, but not in a bad way. I just had no one else to turn to. And Wade scares me...Oh God, I must sound like I was just exchanging my body for a little bit of protection...it isn't like that. Not with you...please, Richie... [he raises a hand in acknowledgement, repeats his request for her to lock up safely and drives off. Uma watches him go.] DAMN! There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. I don't feel like going home to Jack's couch. And I don't feel like going back to that girl's place. A drive will probably help me clear out some of this shit in my head and get my grip back...
<Over an hour later, finds himself pulling into the parking lot of the county law office. One or two cars remain, and a light is on upstairs. What the hell is she doing here by herself, this late at night? Shakes his head and keys himself into the building, taking the stairs to the office he was given to work on his investigative duties, when he's not out on the street. Hers is on the way, her name etched across the frosted glass door in bold gold letters. Stands in the open door, arms and legs crossed, knowing that position gives the most impressive view of his frame. It's a challenge, if she'd just look up from her paperwork.> Don't you have a life? I'm not alone. You're here. So now I'm safe and secure. But it also means I don't have the quiet I need to finish my prep for tomorrow's opening statements on the Hiller case.
