But even now, it could have bought him a life elsewhere, where he could relax and fish for a good long time. But it wasn't his money. It had been someone else's, and it was dirty drug money. Honesty, even if it hurt, was always the best policy. He might have been what Ann or Uma would call a Lothario, because of his ease with the ladies, but he had pride elsewise. Being one of a handful of honest cops was something he'd be able to look back on when he was older with pride. Choosing one friend's reputation and secrets over another's was something like that trunkful of money, but different. He'd ditched all of Nola's and Jack's advice about being on the stand in the witness position- 'yes' and 'no' answers only, and keep anything else to as few words as possible, because he hadn't trusted their warning about Karina Mareva enough. She was simply impervious to the charm that other female lawyers, including his own divorce attorney, had fallen for or naturally dragged out of him with their own wiles. It had been a bad play, but it made him aware of something he thought he'd only flirted with. The clerk at the desk of her apartment building recognizes him and buzzes him in. Closes his eyes and rests his head against the wall of the elevator, watching the numbers change through half-closed eyelids. 5, 6, 7, until the doors open and he is walking the hall to her apartment. She might not be alone, or she might not even be here, the thought comes to him, but still his hand forms a loose fist, the knuckles rapping on her door. Takes a deep breath when he hears the metallic click of locks being let free. What you are trying to say is that you sacrificed your friend Uma, for some perceived notion that my little fling with Cullen Murphy would be slandered around like her comparatively few relationships with other men during periods of separation from her husband? Get real. If nothing else, I would have told the truth on the stand about it, had I been called. I wasn't, because it would look bad in the eyes of the court, and Mareva knew it. She wouldn't call me up anyway, because I'd tear down every shred of credibility she has. And I'd welcome the opportunity. So while you have my gratitude for defending what honor I have and whatever you think you know about me, I'm afraid the only reward I can give you is that. Unless you want me to fuck you, instead.
