After a long walk with Snoops and Buck at the Beach, Kathy and John have lunch at the Phoenix and coffee at the Library. She hasn't told him about Anns job offer yet. Ann was busy talking things over with the french woman and Kathy wanted to make sure she could still spend some time every day walking the dogs and continue with some of her other jobs.

Dino doesn't need his massage today, so she has some time off that she wants to spend looking for more beads and other things she needs to make jewellry.

For a moment she feels bad about not telling John about the massage table she ordered a few weeks ago. He did know that she gave Dino a treatment every day to help him recover. But John probably thought it was what he's seen her do at the Phoenix a couple of times. They had talked about this in the past, as long as she gave people her usual shoulder rubs at the compound or the park John was fine with it. Not happy but fine. He had definitely not been fine with things, when he came home one day and found her checking ebay for a used portable massage table. He had put his foot down, told her he didn't want her to go to strange people's houses. That it was much too dangerous and he would not discuss the idea of her giving full body massages or even just back massages to everyone out there. In her own way she had relented. She had bought the table anyway, had it sent to the Library where it had arrived while they were on vacation and she kept it hidden in the trunk of her car or the basement. And she had started giving massages at people's homes.
Not strangers, just the ones she knew. It was a compromise. A compromise he didn't yet know about...

She shakes off the guilty conscience and heads for her car. Now she needed to bring Baby, one of her afternoon dogs back to her owners and then she could do some shopping. Except that her car decided once again to not start.

"No! Not now. Come one be a good car. I know it's warm and all that but don't do this again." Great, now she has to call Collin or Cort again. Of course she didn't have credit left on her cellphone. Damn! She's had this car forever and she was really attached to it - even gave it a name - but right now she was mad. She'd have to call the garage from the Library or the Phoenix, but she doubted anyone was still working.



She gets out, slams the door shut and gives the front wheel a good kick. "Why do you always do this to me?"
The little terrier jumps and barks- "Aww sorry Baby, didn't mean to scare you. Come on we have to call your home and tell Robin that well be a bit late."

Oi! Red! That's no way to to treat a lady! You gotta be gentle with 'er.... Women and cars, never a good mix.

Kathy squints in the direction the voice comes from and pulls a face. Oh no, not this guy. Just what she needs right now...

"Oh it's you."


"Lady? You mean my car? Speedy sure doesn't act like a lady right now. She won't start. And what do you mean women and car aren't a good mix? Do you have a cell phone I could borrow?"

Kathy frowns and concentrates on listening to him talk. That accent sounded so funny but kind of nice too. It was so similar to the one the bartender in the pub in England had.

While he mutters on about women and cars Baby sniffs his shoes and pants and wags her tail at him. "Oh the thing with leaving the lights on...yeah I've done that. But it only happened three times to me. Not once in the last six months though. And I've run out of gas too, that's true. But only twice, because I didn't have enough money to fill her up and the little light that tells you that you have to refuel is broken."

Suddenly she notices his awkward movements and the way he pulls a face while he looks for his cellphone. "Thanks," she takes it and tries to remember the number of the garage.

Do you want me to take a look at 'er ... save you the cost of having it towed if I can get 'er started?

"You..you would do that?" Kathy blushes. She hasn't forgotten that she's smacked him a good one a while back. Why had she done that? She vaguely remembers that he'd been kind of rude. She bites her lip and studies him. He looks ... the first word that comes to her mind is honest. And he has the nicest eyes. She can detect some confusion and sadness in them. But they were the most amazing shade of blue.



"Wha? Do I have dirt on my nose or why are ya staring red?"

Kathy's cheeks turn a deeper shade of red but she has to laugh. "Sorry, didn't mean to. I just tried to remember why I ..well...why I slapped you back then. You remember that right? Uhm, I'm sorry for that. My name is Kathy Ginger by the way. Who are you? It would be great if you could look at Speedy. I have to bring this one home to her owners." She points down at Baby.

The man throws his cigarette on the floor and grinds it with his boot. Kathy peeks down quickly, black kind of cowboy boots. Nice.

"What's wrong with you?" She has noticed the look of pain and the set of his mouth when he started to walk towards her car. "Are you hurt?"

A man who likes dogs, especially one like tiny Baby, who so wasn't a dog for a guy, couldn't be that bad.

"Oh Baby is not mine. I just walk her and a couple of other ones. That's one of my jobs. Neglecting your duty? What does that mean?"

He then tells her a story and Kathy squeezes her eyes together again in concentration....arrest...tits-up... Suddenly it dawns on her.

"You're a cop then? Excuse me, I meant police officer. Just my luck. I don't usually like cops. Most of them just use the power they've been given by some stupid politicians to harrass people. But I've met a few really nice ones, right here at the Pheonix and the Library. You know Bud White then and John Biebe? They're both co..uhm police officers too. Have you transferred here from another town?"

She laughs when he goes on, "so some girl took on all you big guys because you arrested her boyfriend. I'd do the same."

She immediately stops laughing when he talks about his arm. "A bruised nerv? That can hurt like hell! And you should keep it elevated or else..hm, hold still for a second." She carefully runs her fingers along his arm and up to his shoulder and neck. Even the light touch makes him pull a face and let out a soft hiss. "See, just what I thought. I can even feel it through your clothes. Your arm hurts and then you hold it at a postion that makes it hurt less, but it's so awkward that you tense up your muscles in your back and arm. That'll give you more pain. And that's why you should wear it in a sling and not move it too much."

She checks her watch and looks down at the dog again, "I could make you a deal. You take a look at my car and see if you can help me. If not we can drive Baby home with your car. I give backrubs and such, haven't really professionally learned it but I helped some people in the past. I'll give you the first two treatments for free because you are so nice even though I slapped you. After that I'll make you a good deal. I can come to your place and we'll see how many sessions you need until you feel better. How does that sound? And if you try any funny things I'll bring my own stilettos and believe me, they're higher and more pointy than the ones you made contact with today." She grins at him.

"Jack Aubrey!!"
She turns around and throws her arms around him to give him a hearty hug. "I haven't seen you in the longest time! Were you out on the sea? Hey, turn around and let me inspect your..." she turns him and playfully pulls his ponytail. "It's still there. Good. If you ever cut it off I swear I will channel all the phantoms of the sea and send them after you." She beams at him and gives him a buss on the cheek. "Good that you're here, I have to talk to you about the guy you told me. The one who takes people out whale watching? But we can do that later."

"No, Gene is not bothering me. Quite the opposite actually, he offered me help. My car won't start again. And don't call Baby a beast - she understands every word and she has a very fragile ego."

She turns to Gene who obviously does not appreciate being called names. Kathy hurries to introduce the two men.

"Gene Hunt meet Captain Jack Aubrey. He is a sea captain and from England. And his language is just a little flowery, that's all. A bit like yours actually."

"Jack this is Gene Hunt - a co...officer of the law."

The two men size each other up, both not yet knowing wether they will like the other.

Kathy coughs nervously and the little dog steps back a little.

"Ahm, yeah...if we had time I would suggest a cup of that ayurveda tea for harmony and peace at the Library. It really does wonders, very calming. Jack maybe you and Gene could both look at my car?"

Okay that was maybe not one of her best ideas today, would Jack know anything about cars or would her car end up in the garage for sure now?

"Gene is hurt you know. A woman kicked his arm and let him feel her heels during an arrest."

Great, she thought she'd make it better but now Gene looked really miffed.

But it seems to be just the right thing to mention anyway.

Jack's laugh booms loudly over the compound and he slaps the other man's arm. Kathy winces but thankfully it's the one that's not hurt. "Hahaha, so you had a fight with a wild wench? Been there myself a couple of times. Ladies with a temper, hahaha."
