Yeah well, my business is just fine, thank you. Stay the hell away from it. And tell your boss the same thing.

Clarity? That's your name, right? Mr. Skinner was telling me what a good friend of his you are. Which sort of makes us almost related. Kim Barrett. I'm Mr. Skinner's PA....Enchant a vous rencontrer...
I was wondering if you would like to get together next time you're off work? We could have a drink and a bite to eat? I'll pick you up in my sports car...where are you staying, chrie? ...Business is like sex: when it's good,it's very,very good and when it's not so good - it's still very good... |

Huh? Oh yes, it's my name Max said that? Hey, you speak French! Enchante too, Monsieur Barrett, it's good to meet someone who doesn't seem to think that Max is a forget it.
Get together? Chrie? [This sounds a bit too familiar and too fast for her. She doesn't even know that young man who seems rather self-confident. But he also seems to be kind, and he's a relative of Max isn't that what he said? His PA whatever that means. Besides, she had been secretly hoping someone to come back and he hadn't, so she can't help feeling a little disappointed, in spite of herself. And lonely, far from home, among these people who all know each other already. What was she going to do with her first evening off anyway? Having dinner in good company couldn't hurt, could it?] Well ![]() |

[Kim calls for her the next evening, knocking briskly on her door]

Re: Kim Barrett | ||

Well, thank you. You're very elegant yourself.
Tell me about you? Fine, I like to listen. [She tries to remind herself why she has accepted to have dinner with a man she doesn't know, just because he said he's close to Max Skinner, while she wished that proposition had come from another one instead. But she has to get real, that other man hasn't showed up again, and her running imagination had just mistaken kindness for real interest. She was sincere when she had told that nice woman at the library, Kathy, that she was not looking for romance. But she could really do with a little human company, if not warmth. And the only person who seemed to be ready to spend some time in her company (except Kathy but she was obviously very busy helping her friends and deserved to spend the little time she had left free with her handsome boyfriend) was that young man whose voice, in the background of her thoughts, is lulling her now, while he's driving her to the Phoenix. ![]() Not sure it's such a good idea to spend her night out at her work place, but she's already with an unknown man, she prefers to be at least in a known place, you never know. And, maybe they will get news about that poor woman who got kidnapped? How did he say his name was again? Slim? Tim? Kim? He's good looking and kind with her, but, well, there's something in him that doesn't work for her. Maybe it's because he looks like a younger Maximillian, or rather like she imagines he was without the... well, yes, softness she's been lucky to see in Max already, but that he seems to have hidden again from all these people here. He's even been mean to them while they were obviously living a tragedy. Probably his particular and weird way of hiding his own wounds. She can't blame them for hating him. They don't know about him what she knows. Her task is not going to be easy, and she must not forget the real reason why she's here, so far from home. Something brings her back to the present, and her present company must the change in the young man's tone, and then his silence. He must have asked a question and be waiting for an answer from her. She blushes. Contrary to what she had said, she wasn't listening. Did he ask something about his car?] It's a nice one indeed. The color is very em visible. I must confess I know more about flesh horses than about the ones that are under your hood I mean, the hood of your car. ![]() |

Not to worry. Pretty girls don't need to worry their lovely heads about things like that...you lwave the driving up to me and I'll show you what horsepower can do for a girl....
[he revs the engine and turns sharply into the carpark of the bar in a squeal of brakes] [Jumping out he opens her door flamboyantly...] Let me help you out, love....these bucket seats are pretty hard to manage when you're wearing a tight skirt, so they say...we wouldn't like anyone to get a view of heaven above, hey? [he says as he gives her bare legs a quick check out. Clarity pulls down her skirt in embarrassment...] ...Business is like sex: when it's good,it's very,very good and when it's not so good - it's still very good... |

Re: Kim Barrett | ||

[A few more miles and she would have shown him "what horsepower can do" to this girl. The fresh evening air when he opens the door fortunately makes her feel a little better until he makes that comment about her skirt. She knew she shouldn't have put on that skirt! She really must go shopping with Kathy very soon! She mutters]
Don't you worry about heaven, the gate is well guarded. [She pulls so hard on the guilty skirt that she soon hears the worrying sound of torn cloth. Oh non, please not that! ![]() When she looks up again, her attention is suddenly attracted by one of the cars in the parking lot. Well he has chosen just the right evening to come back to the bar! But, after all, why would he care? And why would she? When she turns her attention again to Kim, she notices that his own attention is now focused on something else or rather someone else a woman with endless legs entering the bar. That man is definitively fascinated by bodies cars or women's ones.] Excuse me, Ayrton Senna. Aren't you hungry? ![]() |

Re: Kim Barrett | ||

Yes, indeed. I'm always hungry. I'm a growing boy...[he wiggles his eyebrows suggestively; Clarity finds him hard to understand]
What do you fancy? I'd suggest oysters, but in my case, they wouldn;t be necessary...[he nudges her and winks saucily...] ...Business is like sex: when it's good,it's very,very good and when it's not so good - it's still very good... |

Re: Kim Barrett | ||

[She tries to keep her body out of his reach as discreetly as she can after he has nudged her rather hard. She thinks she doesn't like much how this evening has started, but because of the language barrier, his funny accent and their different cultures, she's not sure, she wouldn't want to insult him, and embarrass herself, by assuming things that may exist only in her imagination.
She has spotted the sheriff at the bar, even if she can see only his back. He's in deep conversation with Paul, one of his cousins or brothers who attended their big meeting the other evening, and another man she hasn't seen before. She waves shyly at Paul who has seen her, and hopes that the sheriff won't turn. There is absolutely no reason for that, but she doesn't feel at ease at all. "If only it was him who stop that immediately, you stupid girl!" she thinks. With 'ifs' we could put Paris in a bottle. It just isn't him who and that's all. And she's doing nothing wrong, just spending a pleasant evening well, an evening, with a nice man a nice boy well, a boy that maybe could be nice if only she gives him a chance to show her that he can become a friend with whom she'll simply enjoy having a relaxed dinner.] ![]() Em non merci, I'm not so fond of oysters I'd prefer something less alive [and with a good dose of potassium bromide in it for him... just in case, she can't help thinking.] Don't know shouldn't we have some turkey today? Forget it, I think a salad will do, I'm not that hungry anyway. [She tries to think fast and find a topic that will keep him and her, on a safe ground. Oh yes, that always works with men in general and probably this one in particular, from what she's already seen and heard.] Tell me Tim er, Kim. Now that I know everything or at least what a light-headed girl like me should know, about your four-wheeled sparkling baby, maybe you could tell me about yourself? I'm sure you're living a fascinated life. You working with Maximilian? ![]() |

[he gives the order and settles back]
Yeah, I'm his PA. What a guy. He knows everything there is to know about making money, all the scams and how not to get caught, y'know? It's a privilege working for a man like him, not like some of the losers I've had to work for before. I'm making the most of it. One day, I'm going to be just like him. Even bigger. I can't see how a little set up like this in the middle of nowhere could hold the likes of me for long...What was it you said you did? Something to do with honey? Or is that what you give out, baby....[he smirks] ...Business is like sex: when it's good,it's very,very good and when it's not so good - it's still very good... |

[She doesn't get the innuendo.] Oh non, not yet! I'm not ready yet. I'm just starting, you know. It takes a lot of time and attention; it's a labour of love, and patience. But I'm sure I'm going to love it.
Yes, Max is a great man when he wants to, and I've heard he's the best in his job. You're probably going to think I'm a complete idiot if you dont already, but what is PA? Penile Assistant... Penal, I mean Penal Assistant? You're sort of an attorney? ![]() |

Re: Kim Barrett | ||

[As he doesn't answer, she follows the direction of his gaze which is set once more on another woman. She doesn't know if she should feel offended or relieved. Until she notices who that woman is.
She thought the haughty designer was gone back to France, Hell or wherever she belongs to! But no, she's obviously still around, probably to try and scam someone else and will certainly not miss the opportunity to make fun of her again if she ever notices her. But Sophie Sainte-Nitouche's attention is fortunately focused somewhere else. She hates to admit it, but this woman is really classy, more than she could ever be herself, even if she tried hard. All the men's eyes are on her, including the men at the bar. Except Max, who's looking at Uma's bum from behind his newspaper.] ![]() |

Huh? No, I've said: "in France it's not the same" I mean 'PA', it must have a different name there, I suppose. I've met her before, yeah. I'm not sure I'm rich enough to date you, love, either. Another bottle? If you insist. I suppose it might be worth my while later, huh? [he nudges her and winks over at East Driscoll who is quietly downing a beer nearby]
....She doesn't understand much English but she knows how to knock back the vino...leg over guaranteed, eh? [he whispers to East as he slips from his seat to go to the bar] ...Business is like sex: when it's good,it's very,very good and when it's not so good - it's still very good... |

Re: Kim Barrett | ||
|
Huh?
[She fortunately hasn't heard what Kim has said to East, but what he told her just before still echoes in her mind: "It might be worth my while later" How could have she been so nave and not see that coming before? To be honest, she probably had, but had unconsciously ignored it. She so much wanted to relieve her frustration by spending a relaxed evening with someone who could have become her friend, nothing more! So much for a relaxed evening! And, to make things worse, just after having understood her mistake, she thinks she has seen the sheriff look her way for a while, probably having made his own opinion, from what he's seen, about the kind of girl she is. She's looking for a dignified way to leave without making even more a fool of herself, when the soft voice makes her jump.] Oh! Thank you for caring, Monsieur. Bothering me isn't probably the right word. I think I've just realised that I've put myself in a very embarrassing situation. I am the stupider of the two. Now, please tell me that you know a magic formula that will make me disappear right now, and you'll be my hero. ![]() |
