[Jack settles down at his table in his evening class lecture. He has to take a few conversion credits to practise law in the US. The lecture has already started when an untidy looking guy enters, looks embarrassed, stumbles over his words as he tries to apologise and then knocks into a few tables as he makes his way to an empty place. Sitting down next to Jack, he throws down his pad and pen and then realises they are all using a text book... Jack holds up his copy]

<Richie looks at the younger guy for a good few minutes, perplexed and stunned. This isn't his Wednesday night class, that much is apparent. These people are dressed like- where the fuck is he? Textbook? Last week, they'd been preparing for mock opening arguments on Walder vs. the U.S., and he was up for his presentation tonight. >
Did they switch classrooms? I'm supposed to be in CRJU9425. Trial Practice. <He notes the title of the book the kid is holding up> Federal criminal law? Shit. <He looks around, trying to figure out how to escape unnoticed, only to find the eyes of the instructor coolly assessing him and his new friend.> Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

Gentlemen, whatever you're discussing is obviously more important than my lecture. If it will help everyone here pass their bar exams, please share. If it won't, save it until after I dismiss you. Because I can guarantee that what I'm teaching you here, will help everyone pass their bars.

Bloody hell, mate, she's talking about us. Sit down and shut up...share this book...she's got quite a tongue on her...you don't want to attract her attention...

<Returns Nola's gaze full on, and decides he'd rather be staring at her than fumbling through Trial Practice. Slides the book between himself and the kid, smiling beatifically at the instructor.>
The fuck I don't. She's got my attention. Thanks for letting me look on. Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

Mr... <She checks the attendance sheet. His name isn't on it.> Come see me after class, please. Let's get back to what we were talking about.

She wants me. I might be a little late to my next class. Everyone in Jersey's crazy...Cops arrest bad guys. |

[Jack represses a grin]
Try it on and she'll emasculate you. It's her specialty. I should know, I work with her. It must be nice in your head. You think every woman wants you? Now shut up and listen... concentrate on the class or she'll throw us out... Better get that seen to... |

<Nola peeks into Jack's office, to find him not there. She notes the time- 20 minutes past 9 a.m. Blame Richie Roberts, she thinks, and stalks down the hall to her own desk, where the day's cases are piled, and a single red rose says hello from Cullen Murphy. She smells the rose with a fleeting smile, shaking her head.
A new profile catches her eye, with a sticky note from the prodigal assistant.> ![]() ![]() ![]() <She taps the folder thoughtfully with a nail, reads the note and the DVD cover, then pushes the intercom button.> When Jack Corbett shows his face, send him to me. Thank you. |

Re: Jack Corbett | ||

[Jack runs into the office late and less sharply turned out than his usual look. He looks flustered, checks the clock and groans. Then Sharon on the desk tells him Miss Monteleone wants to see him. He grimaces and straightens his tie before hurrying to her door, knocking and popping his head round the door, trying for breezy cool...]

Re: Jack Corbett | ||

<Nola doesn't look up from the papers she is signing.>
That's because you're half an hour late, and you're working on extracurricular cases. <She taps the folder marked "Ben Wade."> Start your explanation here, and work your way to the DVD. |
|||
JackC89 |
Re: Jack Corbett | ||
|
Ben Wade...ah, well it's complicated, you see.... A lvery long story. Maybe after class one of these nights, you, me and Richie could... maybe... have a drink and we can explain? He's- Richie's - in law enforcement and would be able to give you the cop's view on Wade better than I could. Wade's a dangerous guy. But it's very sensitive, you know what I mean?
Anyway, if that's all...I'll just go and get back to work...? [he struggles to hide a yawn] Sorry, I didn't sleep too well last night. Something kept me up all night...the dog next door was howling... Better get that seen to... |

<She sighs and pierces him with a gaze that could cut iron in half>
Jack...what you do on your time is your business. But don't give me excuses. You're a good lawyer, and you're not stupid. Neither am I. The only time you're on time lately, is when you come to my class. However, I think that's your friend Richie's fault, more than yours. You can only burn the candle at both ends so long. |

Re: Jack Corbett | ||

Richie's very studious, Miss M. He works long hours in the night when he's on the job, in a manner of speaking. A man on a mission, you might say. he's teaching me everything he knows. And he would never be late for your class. Me neither. We both hang on every word you say...Well, I'll be off then...

Hey. I need some paperwork. I wanna do a little research on someone. And I don't want Nola to know about it just yet.

Sure thing. Anyone I know? One word of advice. Ms. Monteleone has a sixth sense or eyes in the back of her head or something...so we better keep this out of
the office...and off the main frames. Wouldn't put it past her to run through our histories when we've gone home...
[Richie frowns at this not quite sure what Jack means but unwilling to admit it...] By the way...who was that chick leaving your place this morning...? I didn't get a good look at her from the car when I called to pick you up... You looked like you didn't need a ride, so I drove past....And when did Ms. Monteleone become Nola? Is there something I should know? Come on, Richie, divvy up. You want a favour? Least thing you can do is give me some good dirt... Better get that seen to...

Can't give you what isn't there. She's Nola because I can't say Miss Monteleone with a straight face. C'mon, Jackie, you've seen
worse shit than Nola on the rampage. She's tough, but she's not Hitler. Anyway, the chick coming out of my apartment this morning is none of your
business, either. Just a girl who needed a friend, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Okay. Here's the guy I want history on. Don't look at me like that. Why do you think I don't want her to know?
