It looks absolutely amazing! My God, Andy has excelled himself this time... Let's hope everything goes as smoothly as the food preparations... And my dress sense, of course...
Paul...let's open the doors, shall we? And let the games begin... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart...

"First one on the scene, am I? Figure I'd beat Tio here."
Dino sweeps inside the Phoenix, heading for Uma to grab her in a lecherous hug just to get at Skinner's goat. Just before he lets her go, he whispers, "There's something about the color red that's always sexy. Love the dress, Uma." And then he heads for where Paul's already pouring him a Scotch. "Friends, countrymen -- I raise a toast to our common thread: the ugly bastards who look like my good friend Terry Thorne. To their sorry souls, then! And to ours as well -- for I fear we are unfortunately tied to whatever fun fate has in mind for them." ![]() |

Ralph enters, escorting both Justine and Ann. He's not too thrilled about the idea of exposing Justine to the craziness he expects she'll hear today
but he knows she deserves to be here now that her life's so tied to his and his sister's. Besides, Justine knows most everything by now.
"At least the food looks damned good," he whispers to Justine, leaning toward her so he can wrap an arm around her waist. "Stay close, yes?" "You're the one who has to stay close. At least you know everyone! Promise me you're not going to abandon me?" she says to him. "You kidding? If I let you get too far away from me, one of these bozos is gonna be hitting on ya, beautiful. And that ring on your finger says you're mine." Justine relaxes. She teases Ralph: "I like it when you're possessive." "Good thing. Cuz I'm too old to change, sweetie." In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there was in me
an invincible summer. ~~~Albert Camus |

"Paul, you still know how to make a mojito?" Ann asks at the bar. She takes the stool next to Dino, giving him a smile. "Fancy meeting you here,
Red."
"Not mad at me anymore, Ann?" he asks as she settles next to him. "Yes. I'm still quite furious with you. Does that do me any good? Like, will you stop following Drover now?" "Yeah. Right. That's not gonna work, Annie." She frowns. "This just sucks." "It keeps us all safe." He studies her. "Maybe after today we can relax when it comes to Drover. So far, he's been predictable and easy to follow." "You have no idea how much I hate keeping this from him. I am such a traitor." Ann stares back at Dino. "Seems quite a large double standard is at play. Y'all are intent on following Drover and Logan but seem to be quite complacent about others who may be in the same boat as them. Like Gen, for instance." "Gen?" Dino nearly chokes on his sip of Scotch. "Don't play it that way, Dino. Of course you've thought of her. After all, she's a woman you've told me you knew back in your film world's past -- and she's here, too, even if she isn't maybe the exact Gen you knew in that world. So why isn't she being investigated and followed?" Dino's jaw works side to side. He hesitates. Then: "She was investigated thoroughly before we hired her." "Yet, neither you nor Terry is concerned about what she means -- unlike how worried you are over what Drover and Logan mean?" "Well, Annie, I guess you caught us. On the other hand, she hasn't got a clone, has she?" Ann's chin goes up. She narrows her eyes at Dino. "I'm just saying -- I am not happy that Drover and Logan are under suspicion. I don't think they're here to hurt us any more than any other of the 'anomolies' we've thought of." "Point taken. Loud and clear. Let's just wait and see what Thorne has to report to us -- and what the others may have to tell us." "Peace, then?" "Peace."

At the ranch, Egan and East are getting a late start to head to the brunch at the Phoenix. Egan wanted to be sure Tulip was settled in and feeling safe for
them to leave her alone.
East waits out by his truck, looking at his watch, pacing a bit. He mumbles darkly under his breath about Egan and how long it takes the bastard to get the words out under normal circumstances. With this sheila, it's liable to take him til next week to say what he wants to say. Just then, a taxi pulls up and Drover gets out. When he reaches East, he asks what's going on. East says, "Egan and me, we got a gathering of the clan to tend to." "Like a family party?" Drover asks, not really sure what East means. "Something like that, yeah. Lotta talking probably. The invite said to 'arrange our affairs' to make sure we're there. Only one of us talks that way -- meaning Thorne. If it's him set this up, then it's sure everyone's gonna show up," East says. Suddenly he snaps his fingers and grins at Drover. "Y'know, that's a point, isn't it, mate?" "What's a point?" Drover asks. "Everyone's gonna be there, in one place. It's at the Phoenix. You should come -- you'd get to meet 'em all, one swoop. Whattaya say?" Drover purses his lips and considers. "Ann didn't say anything about this." "Probably just for the men folk, Drover. Like as not, she wasn't on the guest list. That settles it. You're coming with. We'll have a fine old time." They both turn when Egan lets the house's front door close behind him. He looks between them, a tough look on his face. He wasn't expecting Drover to be back. He has an instinctual reluctance to leave another man alone with a woman he's interested in -- no matter how good a friend and how much he knows that friend's seeing another woman. His voice comes out growly: "What're you two up to?" "Just decided Drover's coming with us to the brunch with the men. We'll introduce him around, do some drinking, hear whatever Thorne's got to say. Good plan, isn't it?" Egan glances back at the house, seeing Tulip standing in the window, smiling at him. He gives her a wave and then says, "What're we waiting on, then, mates? Let's shove off. Late enough as it is ..." Things change, don't they?

The Drover |

I ride to town with the lads wondering if this is really the smart thing to do.
There's still something about going to town, even now in this time and place, that still makes me hesitate. While my past may be behind me and things may be different here and now, there are times it's easier to forget the past than others. But if I'm going to keep moving forward, if I mean to be the man I want to be, then it's time to meet some of the other men in this town. Just because it is, doesn't mean it should be. |

So, I'm not even the first? Funny how food brings this lot out...Uma, you look beautiful as ever...Dino, also in red, I see? Ann...[he takes her hand and kisses it flamboyantly] ..what can I say? Good to see you again. Ralph, hey mate, how's it hanging? And
this must be your beautiful fiancée... Justine, isn't it? Enchanté...
[Everyone looks a little surprised at Terry's mood. Not that any of them thought he wasn't capable of charm, but recently he hasn't been showing much evidence of it...The after effects of the massage and a good night's sleep following it, seem to have worked wonders..] Paul...a round of drinks for my good friends here...and don't forget yourself and the redoubtable Mr. Skinner... I'm for real, mate... |

The next round, Terry. First drinks are on the house.
Well, isn't this just too cosy? All best friends together for a lovely Sunday brunch...isn't it just grand? Although I must say, we make entertaining bedfellows, wouldn't you agree? [Max smirks and Uma throws him a dagger look. He just can't resist getting in the digs...] Winning isn't everything - it's the only thing...

Here we go...Ann - a mojito. Uma -a vodkini; Justine - white wine; Terry, Ralph couple of beers and a fine malt for Mr. O'Leary. Saved you a place near me,
Dino. On the partners' table. You and Terry make a lovely couple, I must say...would you like an umbrella in that malt? Like the rest of us girls?
By the way...[he lowers his voice to mutter to Dino]...I think we may have a problem. [he nods to the CCTV showing the parking lot outside] Dumb and Dumber have arrived with a mate...you think we can sort this out without alerting the ladies...especially Ann? You and Terry might have more success than if I send Skinner the Subtle out to tell Drover to bugger off... |

Dino takes a sidelong look at the monitor. He gives Paul a nod of thanks and then gets Terry's attention. The two of them move outside the Phoenix, just in
time to intercept Egan, East and Drover as they're maybe ten yards from the entrance. They plant themselves right in the path of the three new arrivals.
"So, guys, which part of 'by invitation only' did you interpret to mean you should bring a guest?" Dino says, figuring a joke is a better way to start than how Terry will start, no matter how good Tio's mood is this day. "Sorry, Drover, but it appears there's been a misunderstanding on your buddies' parts. I hate to do this to ya, man, but I'm afraid we really did mean to keep it to invited guests only." ![]() |

Sitting alone at the bar, Ann has nothing to do but watch the others. So naturally, she sees Dino and Terry make a swift exit. Curious, she goes to the window
and sees Drover walking toward the Phoenix with Egan and East.
And she sees how Terry and Dino go all big and tough on them -- planting themselves there like they're the bouncers or something. She's already out the door, nearly running to where the five men are in a little knot. When she reaches them, it's just in time to hear Terry say something in that flat, military voice of his. She marches right to Drover's side, and turns on Terry and Dino.
"Okay, I've had about enough of this. You two just back off. What is wrong with you?" She slips her hand around Drover's arm. "I expect you both to treat Drover with respect if for no other reason than that he's important to me. Now whatever you have to say to him, you can say it to me, too."

Annie, Annie, Annie...come on now! Gimme a break....negotiation is what I do best, remember? [he mutters to her before
smiling across at Drover...and launching into the Aussie equivalent of a good ole boy spiel..]
...Sorry, mate, don't mean to go in mob-handed or anything but I'm afraid these two jokers got the wrong end of the stick. This is a private party, I'm afraid. A bit of local community business, to be frank. Nothing exciting. What say I get Andy to put aside a sizeable doggy bag with a six pack on the house for you by means of an apology for turfing you out? Least ways you'll get a decent supper tonight. Next time you're in, I'm buying. S'time we got acquainted. A new Oz in town and we haven't had a yarn yet? Okay? No hard feelings? Cheers, mate... I'm for real, mate... |

Egan shakes his head, gives East a glare the instant before he slaps him across the back of his head. "Drongo! Didya not ever learn to read yet?"
East says, "What? I know how to read! Just didn't read to the end ..." They glare at each other a bit more and then offer Drover a look. Egan says, "Sorry, mate. Our fault ... We'll just go off with ya ... No worries." ~~ The Man ~~

"No, don't you all go." I grab Drover's hand and pull him a step away to say, "Look, I'm sorry about this - but I want to see you.
Would you wait for me? Here's my keys -- you could wait up at my place until I'm through? So I can see you ... Would you, Drover?

Having been busy trying to decide whether or not to feel offended by this bloke's speech, I see what my showing up has done. Clearly, whatever the
reason for this town hall meeting, I wasn't invited or expected.

Guess who just failed 'Negotiating 101?' Christ, that was bloody awful! Remind me to strangle those two later...Give me Al-Qaeda any day... I'm for real, mate... |

So, ladies ... and Ann ... shall we go inside and pretend this didn't happen? I'm sure Drover would like to think we're not normally this screwed
up. Talk about your dysfunctional families ...

Maximus strolls up with Sophie, just catching the tail end of what's been happening out on the veranda, quickly sizing up the body language of everyone in
the group.
As they reach them, Maximus says dryly, "Have we missed the battle? Or was it the entire war?" Now we are free...

Just me making an arse of myself...I'll fill you in later. In the meantime, go give the look to East and Egan...they deserve a fright... Sophie. Good to
see you again....Let's go inside and get this show on the road, huh?

[Uma dashes over - she's been watching the interlude on the close circuit TV...]
Thanks for that, lads. Sorry you two had to be the bad guys. What possessed Egan and East? They look pretty contrite about it, though. No need to rub it in. I'm sure they feel really bad about it. So, when you're ready...I think everyone's just about here... There is a place you can touch a woman that will drive her crazy. Her heart...
